Title: Ian Beale grabs a bargain Anytime fare
Post by: JayMac on August 12, 2015, 15:32:20
I'd love to know how Ian Beale managed to get this bargain:

As seen on EastEnders 11th August 2015.

Anytime Day Single from London Paddington to Plymouth for just ^53.50. Not only that but valid for travel on 'ANY' date. And with a cross London transfer.

??? ;D

Terrible. He should stop biting his nails.

Shouldn't Plymouth have a * after it too?

Where it says "Single" shouldn't it say "Divorced several times - useless Husband and Father"?!

Indeed: didn't Cindy attempt to have him 'terminated at Walford', on that general basis?  ::) :o ;D

Quite possible. I think I stopped watching when Dirty Den was shot dead for the second time.

Yes, Bobm :)  I'm an Archers man myself on the basis that you can not listen to an episode for years and it is very easy to pick it back up!

In 1985 I shared a house with a mate of mine who worked as a VT operator at TVC. He came home one day and said, "There's a new soap opera starting tonight called EastEnders. We must watch it - we can tell our grandchildren we saw the first episode."

We sat through about 15 minutes of it and then went to the pub. That was the last episode I saw...  ;D

Quite possible. I think I stopped watching when Dirty Den was shot dead for the second time.

Second time he was bludgeoned by an iron doorstop, not shot. Then buried in concrete in The Vic cellar.

Oh yes, I stand corrected - shows how much notice I take!

Back to the suspect ticket - it has 'Rail Settlement Plan' repeated on the central background. Don't they all have 'National Rail' these days? When did that change?

The NLC (four digits), machine number (four digits) and window number (two digits) string has too many digits.  Also no payment method indicator after the price.  No time next to the printed date.

But what you would expect from someone who is portrayed to be serving food on wooden chopping boards*: https://twitter.com/Burtshire/status/631185942829789184

* = A "trendy" London thing that I really detest but has unfortunately spread further afield

Totally agree with you there.. and it is not only chopping boards, I have been offered food on what looked like roof slates - complete with sauce which flowed everywhere.  Not pleasant.

Drinks too.  I was served a "pint" of beer in an old jam jar at a bar in Manchester.  The old (dirty) lid was even placed on the jar.  They did not seem best pleased when I pointed out there was no CE mark or crown stamp on the glass.  Rather unsurprisingly, the "pint" only filled up 2/3 of a pint glass when it was transferred.  The manager seemed rather embarrased at having to fill it up to the top.

Sadly I forgot to note down the establishment's name before leaving, else it would have been reported to the city council.

We're drifting a bit but I agree with others. I hate these pretentious ways of presenting food.

I recently witnessed chips being served in a miniature supermarket trolley.  ::)

To try to avoid any further drift off topic ... what was the plot requirement in Eastenders (other terminally boring soap opera series are also available) for Ian Beale to be able to produce what was clearly an invalid ticket in that particular episode?  ::)

It's complicated...

Ian bought the tickets for Cindy (Jnr) (daughter of Cindy Beale from an extra marital relationship, half sister of Lucy Beale, Ian is her guardian) and Liam Butcher to send them away to Devon. Liam knows the truth that Ian's son Bobby killed his half sister Lucy, having been told this by Cindy.

Ian and Jane Beale are trying to keep secret the fact that their young son (Jane is his adoptive mother) Bobby killed Lucy. Now Liam knows the truth Ian wants him out the way. Devon is the answer apparently, although Liam is now trying to blackmail Ian, demanding ^100,000 to keep schtum.

Doof Doof, dof dof dof dof...

How did they hide Lucy's body?  Bury her in the cellar, too?  :o

Actually, there's a precedent for that: Hawley Harvey Crippen - he should have patented his solution. :P ::) :-X

Body wasn't hidden very well cos she got dumped in Walford common.

The Plymouth connection is some random relative of Cindy I believe.

Jane Beale dumped Lucy's body after Bobby killed her. She walked in just after the act. Young Bobby still had the murder weapon (a music box of all things) in his hand. Bobby killed his half sister because she was a 'bad person', tearing the family apart.

Actually, that may have been a rather unfortunate expression to use ...  :P :-[ :-X

I assumed it was because somebody told them Plymouth was every bit as depressing as 'Albert Square' and they would therefore feel at home.  ;D

BNM I have no interest in this programme (sp?) whatsoever but your description has to be the most entertaining yet..please don't tell me you have it set to record on series link though...what a waste of electrons :)

I rarely watch EastEnders. Honest.

Gathered info to answer CfN's query from Wikipedia.

As far as I know it's always been that way since the "like" link has been introduced.

When you press "like" it goes "Yum!" and if you "unlike" it goes "Yuk!" ... added a day or two after I implemented the like system, to give immediate feedback that the press was registered (after questions "did that work?").  Note that once pressed, you need to refresh the page for it to flag again - you can't keep pressing and changing the word - bit of a kludge!

Anyway, back to the OT - where do TV shows get these tickets from? If they are printed "in house" then they look pretty good copies (apart from the printing discrepancies which were covered earlier)

Sorry BB. I was trying to make a little joke about the "flowing sauce" in bobm's post ::) :D ;)
