Title: Melksham to the world - TransWilts Journeys
Post by: grahame on May 25, 2015, 17:00:51
Since the TransWilts service was improved towards the end of 2013, I've travelled by train from my local station in Melksham to no fewer than 12 different countries.   Tickets such as RailSail, CIV and Gatwick Flyer, and a local connecting bus to the station, make this a really effective way to get around.   Alas, many of my trips have been for work - so I lack iconic picture of some of th countries.   Which ones can YOU work out?

1. Paris, Ellendune

2. Barcelona, Bignosemac

3.  The statue of liberty and Manhattan, probably taken from teh Newark cruise terminal or thereabouts.  I have a similar picture so perhaps that is cheating ;)

10. Glasgow Central.

Both correct.    Both business trips without the opportunity to take a really iconic picture of the city's landmarks, so well spotted.

I've updated the original post to show which have been identified.   Free for all now - and there's at least one easy one left.

I'm happy with the COUNTRY for many of these - exact locations are going to be tough in some cases!

Nope, sorry - not Germany at all.   Looks like it though!

Someone has to say the obvious.

I believe the edifice in 1 was designed by Alexandre Gustave Eifel. It is not a lattice bridge in Porto, so just perhaps it is a tower in Paris.

You have the correct country (England) but the wrong end of the country - taken in a town with a station; travelled there on rail promotion business.

It is indeed the Eiffel Tower - and it's also the most recent of all the pictures in my series, taken from the No. 42 bus headed for "Station of the North".

12 ... is either Taunton, or Ponta Delgarda in the Azores.  I'm not convinced it's Taunton, though.  :P ::) ;D

Could be East Reach, Taunton, before they put all the traffic lights in.

Then it must be Scarborough - Oh no can't be - isn't Yorkshire was a separate country!

9. Llandrindod Wells

Yes, putting it into another country (Wales).    A lot of the "Wells"s have been dropped, so I think it's supposed to be just "Llandrindod" these days.   Of course, if there were still a station at Wells, that would have been renamed "" by the same token and have the shortest name for a station anywhere in the world!

Am I correct that 11 is Scarborough.

Yes, you are correct.  The country of Yorkshire

Some clues to mop up 6,7,8?

Then I can post my prize quiz.  :D

All three taken on the same trip - within the first few days of the new train services starting from Melksham in December 2013.  I left the UK by a ferry on that occasion, rather tun through a tunnel or on a train, and spend about a day getting to final destination once I got to the "other side".

Looks like no-one's coming in this more answers and as I want to see us get onto the prize quiz, I'll mop up - Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands and the final 3 - Thun, Mannheim and Rotterdam Central.
