Title: Diverted via the TransWilts - a need to take a look at capacity?

17:33 London Paddington to Paignton due 21:22
This train will be diverted between Reading and Westbury.
This train will call additionally at Swindon.
This train will no longer call at Newbury and Pewsey.
This is due to signalling problems. Last Updated :28/04/2015 17:58

Yet again ... diversions via the TransWilts.    Are we getting to the point that extra signals / a loop / refuges for trains waiting for the single line section or mainline / doubling ... would be useful sooner rather than later?  ;D

Wouldn't have applied in this case but I wonder how much of a performance improvement there would be if up trains didn't have to run wrong line from the branch until Thingley East and then cross over.

As a supplementary question - why was the junction set up that way?
