Title: SWT renaming stations for Valentine's Day
Post by: Brucey on February 14, 2015, 19:05:32
The latest pointless stunt by a TOC is South West Trains' attempt to change their station names on information screens.

London Waterloo = London Waterlove
Clapham Junction = Cupid Junction
Richmond = Rich (in love) mond
Guildford = Gorgeous Guildford

Whilst it may seem funny to some people (I thought it was nothing but tacky), this could be rather confusing to tourists and anyone whose first language is not English.

See the Evening Standard for photographs: http://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/london-waterlove-to-gorgeous-guildford-rail-operators-stunt-leaves-passengers-feeling-cold-10046544.html

I saw "Gorgeous Guildford" on the display at my local station this afternoon. My first thought was that someone had been mucking around with the system until I saw London Waterlove and Love Ascotly at Guildford and realised what day it was.

Wonder why they didn't rename Clapham Junction "The Clap"?

Some others included:

Liphook = Lips-hooked
Petersfield = Passionfield
? = Four weddings
? = Kissington Sth

The last two are so good, I can't actually work out what they are supposed to be  ???

Kissington would be Chessington, but I've no clue what the Four Weddings one could be.

I've looked at the SWT network map and I've drawn a blank. The only one I can think of is Fulwell on the basis that the start of each syllable matches the start of each word in Four Weddings.

Well, that train was for Twickenham (only because of the rugby match). Pretty feeble, huh?

I cheated and looked it up... it's Four Weddings and Farnborough.

I feared as much.

They seem to have not twigged that a stunt like this has to pass two tests:
1. It should not cause problems, for example by confusing people who can't guess the station.
2. It should be witty.

This fails on both counts.

Erhem: Effingham Junction needs no modification for Valentine's Day... Or have I just got a dirty mind?
