Post by: Palfers on February 10, 2015, 19:49:43
Quote
17:06 London Paddington to Bedwyn due 18:27

This train is being delayed at Pewsey.
This train will be diverted from Bedwyn.
This train will be terminated at Westbury.
This train will call additionally at Westbury.
This train will no longer call at Trowbridge, Bradford-on-Avon, Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads.
This is due to a train fault.

Was it meant to be going the long way round to Bedwyn, via Bristol?  ???

Good question that I'm unsure I was just surprised to see so many changes to that train

It was going to Bristol via Bedwyn ... the 17:06 has transformed from a London to Westbury train with an ECS on to Bristol into a London to Bristol via Bedwyn train - providing the only through train of the day from Paddington to Trowbridge and Bradford-on-Avon.

I'm guessing there was a problem with the front cab, so they reversed at Westbury rather than taking the avoiding curve.   Pure guess though and I stand to be corrected.

Its usual calling pattern from Paddington is Twyford, then most stations Reading to Pewsey, then next to Trowbridge and on to Bristol via Bath, avoiding Westbury by taking the Westbury East Loop to Hawkeridge Junction. Tonight because of brake problems the service was diverted into Westbury station and terminated there. Passengers transferred onto alternative onward services to Trowbridge, BoA, Bath and Bristol.

An issue with the braking system, specifically the E70 brake control unit in the front cab, so, yes, a reversal at Westbury was required with the driver evaluating whether the other cab could successfully be used.  That obviously wasn't the case, so, as BNM says, that's where it terminated.
