Cyclist trapped under train after falling off bike onto tracks

A cyclist is in hospital after he became trapped under a train as fell from his bike onto tracks at a station.

The man fell onto the tracks at Uddingston in Lanarkshire just after 9pm on Saturday.

Emergency services attended the scene and a full rescue operation was launched to bring the man to safety.

Two fire engines and a heavy rescue vehicle were sent out to assist with the operation.

The man was eventually freed from beneath the train and taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries. He remains at Monklands General Hospital.

Police said an investigation has now been launched to establish the full circumstances surround the incident.

However, it is understood to have been an accident in which the man fell off his bicycle while cycling on the platform.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said: "SFRS was called to assist with a man trapped under a train; located close to Uddingston Railway Station in South Lanarkshire on Saturday. Operations Control Johnstone received the first of several 999 calls at 9.09pm and mobilised two fire appliances and one heavy rescue vehicle. On their arrival firefighters quickly established a safe working area in and around the train by requesting Network Rail to stop all rail traffic coming in and out of the railway station. Fire crews worked alongside colleagues from the British Transport Police, Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service to quickly remove the casualty from under the train and provided on scene medical treatment prior to their transportation to nearby Monklands Hospital. There will be a full investigation into the incident conducted by the British Transport Police."

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "Our officers were called to Uddingston station shortly after 9pm on Saturday, 27 September, after reports a man had fallen onto the track. Colleagues from Police Scotland and Scottish Ambulance Service also attended, and a 48-year-old man from Bellshill was taken to hospital, where he remains. The incident is not being treated as suspicious, but enquiries continue. Members of the public are reminded to take care on station platforms."
