Title: Asda proposal for Melksham - please let me know views
Post by: grahame on January 14, 2008, 07:21:34
Have a look at this ... I'll be submitting it tomorrow to the District Council. Please let me know of any obvious goofs.

In summary ... it would be wonderful to have Asda, but NOT with the currently proposed access which is NOT oriented towards public transport, cycle or pedestrian (in fact it tries to buy them off as cheaply as possible) and would have considerable negative effects on an already congested road.  Also there's a roadside walkway that looks dangerous when it would be so easy to keep the pededtarians and cycles very well away from the trunk A350.

My objection - and suggested alternatives that would allow he store to go ahead and be a real asset:

Graham, I think it's also worth mentioning that the proposed Asda site is immediately adjacent to a sewerage treatment works which during times of high humidity absolutely stinks, not to put too fine a point on it. People I've spoken to who have lived in the area for a few years are all agreed that there's no way they'd ever consider buying their food there during the summer months when the familiar green cloud starts to hover over Challymead.

Utterly worth mentioning here, certainly;  I'm not so sure if it's something that should go into my submisssion as that would then go off on all sorts of tangents.    I've not made major play of the flooding issue either ...

You have a couple of days - why not put in your own comments on planning application 07/03866/FUL to West Wilts District Council  ;D.   Seriously - the planners need it all on file and I'm sure that Asda's team will be grateful in the long term if you raise problems which they may have known of, but not appreciated the depth of the issue.
