Three taken to hospital after carriage of Longleat train overturns

A fire crew from Westbury and a crew from Warminster went to Longleat Safari Park today, after the rear carriage of the park^s railway train overturned this afternoon while there were 155 people on board.

One woman is thought to have been trapped by the leg at one point but was free by the time fire crews arrived.

A later tweet said: "Crews from Warminster & Westbury been to Longleat this pm where rear carriage of on-site train had overturned. Happily no-one trapped."

Wiltshire Air Ambulance was at the scene and flew a woman to the Royal United Hospital, Bath, for treatment.

"If you watch and read the local news, you'd think said carriage drove headlong into a passing rhino, flipped off the tracks, did a mid-air somersault, smashed into a tree and landed in a lion enclosure where all the passengers were savaged..."

An eyewitness who was on the train said it was "a horrible experience"

A miniature train accident at Longleat Adventure Park is being investigated by the rail watchdog, the BBC has learned.

Six people were hurt when the Jungle Express train derailed at the Wiltshire park on 20 August.

The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) said a similar incident in September 2011 was not examined by them as it was not aware of it.

A Longleat spokesman said the ride would remain closed while the investigation continued.

A miniature train at Longleat Adventure Park has derailed for the third time in three years.

Managers at the centre said the train was "reversing back" towards a station when the "rear bogie of the last carriage" derailed, on Sunday.

All the passengers on the train were taken off and escorted away and nobody was injured.

The train service has been suspended while a "thorough investigation is carried out", Longleat added.

The train previously derailed in August and the BBC learned of a similar incident which took place in 2011.

'No technical issues'
 
The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) is investigating August's derailment. The result of that probe has not yet been released.

An ORR spokesman said it was looking into the latest derailment alongside the August one.

Information from Sunday's incident would "inform" the August investigation, he said.

A Longleat spokesman said he was "confident there are no technical issues with the train or the track".

"The train was operating during a private event and Longleat have been in full communication with the event organisers," he added.

The ORR regulates health and safety for the entire mainline rail network in Britain, as well as London Underground, light rail, trams and the heritage sector.
