There were lots of staff around giving out information that they were receiving from the outside - radios and phones. Water was being handed out. I got a bottle - thank-you! Nice FGW staff member heading for Platform 12 gave me the tip that services were about to start in 45 minute - it was 16h10. That stopped me heading for Waterloo. Another very helpful FGW man on the gate line kept me informed as per progress and tipped me the nod when the first Reading fast was about to leave. I even got a seat - and thanks for the water BTW.
My impressions were well done tonight FGW. Your analysis of last Friday's disaster bore good fruit. Communication was obviously incoming from NR and was being relayed to us that politely asked. Only 40 minutes late - some poor family in Ealing will be waiting too long, for ever, tonight. I'll second that. I also feel for the staff at Ealing Broadway, it is the second fatality there in less than a month. I was on the late running 10:00 from Penzance which was brought to a stand at Slough just before 15:30. The train was full and standing and the train manager got permission from control to release the doors to allow people to stretch their legs or sit on the platform benches as it was clear the train was going to be held for a while. I decided to abandon my trip to London and crossed over to a stopping service back to Reading which started from Slough at 15:44. As I travelled back to Reading there were HSTs being held at Taplow, Maidenhead, just before Maidenhead and Twyford. My train arrived in Reading just as an HST left for Swansea having been turned short which meant a 75 minute wait for the next westbound service. There were plenty of staff about - who relied on megaphones to give out information rather than rely on the automatic announcements. Having been at Reading for last week's disruption, it certainly seemed lessons had been learned this week. I notice there were a couple of trains which left Paddington just before the incident which never reached Reading, I assume they were sent back to Paddington as they just disappeared from the screens.
