Title: Working day - from when to when?
Post by: grahame on June 01, 2014, 09:26:57
I'm looking to work out what proportion of regular day employees are REALLY "9 to 5" ... or do you work longer?   Please answer is you do something close to a traditional week.

I think you might want to check the options you've given us Grahame!

There isn't really a shift work option there.

Done - one was very wrong (about moving a child!)  - sorry - posted mobile

Correct - I'm looking to learn about commuter time trains into Swindon from West Wilts, and back out in the evening, and see what the effect of chaining them from 2017 would be

I've gone for the "it varies" option.  I have a 39 hour contract, which I average out over a month rather than weekly.  As we are forced to have at least 30 minutes for lunch, that means most days are 9 to 5, but I have to have a few days of starting earlier or finishing later each month.  The 9-5 works perfectly for public transport but the other day always results in having to drive.

I'm shamelessly bumping up this topic to get YOU ;) to respond today ... I'm at a Community Rail conference tomorrow with the prospect of meeting some bigwigs, and I want to get a flavour for what the working day really is for people these days.   The issues being discussed are likely to be peak train times ... I love people who do shifts as they help to fill trains at other hours, but I'm asking them to sit this one out and celebrate the fact they can get a seat!

Shift worker here. Back in a previous life sat behind a desk though I started work at or before 9 [usually 07:30] and finished well before 5.

In a previous employment, when I was a regular / frequent commuter, I would have been an "I Start work at or after 9 and finish well after 5" voter.  In fact, I originally negotiated those particular working hours with my then employer, simply because I was originally finding it difficult to be absolutely sure of arriving in the office by 9:00, in a time-critical role.  First Great Western subsequently improved their reliability on my local service significantly, but I chose to continue with those working hours, which had become quite habitual by then ...  ::)

Hope that helps.  ;D

I'm a 75% 9-5er, I have to do one week a month where I cover the evening so work 12-8 1 in 4 weeks,
For some reason fgw don't think us 9-5ers in Cornwall need a train to get home if we work east of Redruth.
