Title: Fares database Avantix Traveller from May 18th 2014 - free download.
Post by: JayMac on April 27, 2014, 18:42:43
ATOC have made the next Avantix Traveller program (NFM 18) free to download. Previously the program was only available for a charge of around ^15.

You have to register with ATOC and obtain a license. This is free if the data you require is for personal non-commercial use.

To register: http://data.atoc.org/user/register
To download data (including NFM 18): http://data.atoc.org/data-download

NFM 18 comes as a .zip file so you will need a suitable application to unzip the file. Once unzipped you need to locate setup.exe to install the program. Will only run on Windows operating systems.

Thanks for the heads up on this :)

If you do not have the ability to open a .zip file. May I recommend the Open Source Program 7zip? A free open source program which allows you to open .zip .7z .tar.gz .rar files all as examples.

The program is available at: http://www.7-zip.org (http://www.7-zip.org)

Once installed; you should then be able to right click the downloaded ZIP file, go to the 7zip menu option and click "Extract to here" and the program will extract the files for you. You then run the setup.exe file as per BNM' post. :)

If you're not sure which version of Windows you are running (i.e. 32 or 64 bit) then simply go to http://www.ninite.com (http://www.ninite.com) and tick the 7zip box and then download Setup. This will install the correct version of 7zip to your computer automatically.

These instructions are intended as a guide only and are provided E&OE. You should NEVER open a .zip attachment from anyone received in an email; even if you recognise the sender. Unless you are expecting the document. Even then this should be treated with some caution!

Hope that helps :)

Since the application concerned only runs on Windows, I doubt the .zip format will be a problem. In my experience, Windows comes with the ability to open .zip files by default.

Thanks for sharing bignosemac.  Always handy to have this software available on the move, especially where getting an internet connection can be difficult.

As an aside, I've had previous editions running in Ubuntu Linux using Wine.  It is a shame they don't provide a cross-platform solution, e.g. in Java.

Doesn't the wine damage the computer?   ;D

If I have to change trains most laptops are light enough that whether the connection is cross platform or whether I have to use the foot bridge is not much more of an issue that at other times.    ;D

Good news, and not before time!

Hopefully this thread is not too stale for me to revive it, as the original instructions may be relevant to anyone wanting to help me out :)

I wondering if anyone had downloaded NFM20 yet from ATOC?

It became available relatively recently so I decided to install it, but the fares do not seem to be the 2015 ones (not on my PC anyway).

e.g. Penzance to Paddington Super Off Peak Single is listed as ^60.50, yet on online booking engines it is ^62.00 (for a date in 2015).

This turned out to be a simple case of user (me) error.

The date defaults to today so the program shows the current fares. Only when selecting 02/01/2015 or later are the revised fares shown.
