Title: Where was I today? No clues, and the stopwatch starts NOW!
Post by: Chris from Nailsea on March 12, 2014, 21:05:52
Chris from Nailsea was out and about today: here are two pictures, taken at the same road overbridge location, facing in opposite directions:

Taunton? (joking!)

Lampley Road, North End, near Yatton. Overlooking the former branch line to Clevedon.

Took exactly 20 minutes.  ;D

Correct, and within a commendable time!  ;D

I'll show my workings.

Knowing your 'beat' (as it were  ;)) I first tried the Portishead branch on Google Street View, but views from any overbridges there still show track in situ. Then I thought about the Cheddar Valley Line (aka Strawberry Line) from Yatton to Wells, but it quickly became apparent that the former trackbed is paved throughout. So it was finally on to the Clevedon Branch, and lo, you were parked atop the second extant road bridge following the old line north from Yatton.  :P ;) ;D

Now, my turn. I was actually in the process of doing a similar teaser when this one diverted me. Great minds eh?

I came across a similar scene in Cornwall yesterday, I didn't even know there was formerly a railway line in the location. I drove over a bridge a thought that it looked like a disused railway bridge, about 50 metres to the left was what looked like a railway viaduct.
I'm going to head back and try to retrace my route so I can find out the location on GPS to work out what former line it was.

Excellent: I rather hoped that you'd initially fall for the Portishead Presumption ...  ;) :D ;D

Ok - staying with the same theme - where is this former railway....

It's in BaNES?   Bath and North East Somerset ... I think.

Somewhere near Weymouth? The old Weymouth - Portland line?

That would have been my second guess  ;D after Midford

Afraid not - neither is close.

I thought it might be a tricky one because it surprised me too.  If no one gets it I will reveal the answer in the morning.

Well, I'm fairly flummoxed on that one, bobm!  :o

Red brick construction, so probably not anywhere in my local area ... but I'm really struggling to suggest even where it might be!  :-[

Spot on CfN, not your neck of the woods.  Look east nor east my boy!

It's not somewhere on the Midland & South Western Junction Railway is it?

Title: Re: Where was I today? No clues, and the stopwatch starts NOW!

Another success for bignosemac!

It is indeed part of the Midland & South Western Junction Railway.  Specifically the Westlecot Road bridge a short distance from the old Swindon Town station heading towards Rushey Platt.

I had been meaning to pop there for a while and Chris from Nailsea's earlier photo inspired me to go on Thursday afternoon as the fog cleared.  Despite being close to the hustle and bustle of Old Town it is in a deep cutting and you are not aware of all the day to day life going on above you.

I plan to go back in the summer when conditions underfoot are a little better.  It is used as a cycleway and it's a wee bit muddy in places however you can walk westwards for quite a distance until you cross a stretch of the restored Wilts & Berks Canal and ultimately the GW mainline just past the Running Horse bridge.

I've walked that section with an old schoolfriend and her dogs. And seen it from the bus heading to Okus.

No use of Google Earth this time, just an inspired guess after your clue for it being east nor' east of Nailsea!

Continuing the theme. Where's this?

Hmm. :P  That scene looks vaguely familiar to me: I rather think I might have been standing next to you when you took that picture?  ;) :D ;D

Indeed Chris. Thanks for resisting the urge to answer. Let's see of anyone can guess this location, which is west sou' west from bobm's picture.

Meanwhile I am disqualifying myself for a different reason.  Will explain when the picture is identified....  ;)

Time for a clue then.

This location is where one, formerly closed - now reopened, line crosses a closed line. The histories of both lines are intertwined.

Watchet; where the Taunton to Minehead (now WSR) line crosses over the old West Somerset Mineral Railway.

I suspect I made that rather too hard and the picture was very fuzzy as we dashed past early yesterday afternoon. You may recall from another thread that I travelled to Glasgow yesterday, getting in to Central at 21:13

OK ... It's Lacock Halt - newly cut back undergrowth has exposed the old platform.

Wow! Thanks for posting that one, grahame - I didn't know anything about Lacock Halt, and having done a bit of looking around on the internet, even wikipedia doesn't have much detailed information to offer.  :P

Now it's my turn again: I'd like to think that this one will be a real tester, because I nearly missed it myself - and I knew what I was looking for!

No, it's not Moor Lane, Walton in Gordano.  By a remarkable coincidence, I was actually in Moor Lane in Walton in Gordano today - but I didn't have time to stop for photography, unfortunately.  ::)

The picture I took yesterday is not anywhere on the Weston Clevedon & Portishead line: I took several pictures at the time, but chose to post the one including the front of my Mercedes Sprinter Waitrose van simply to demonstrate that that particular location is visible from a public road.  ;)

I drove up Bourne Lane again this afternoon, and was reminded that the location of my picture still hasn't been identified ...  ;D

Well, with that road identifier, I'm fairly confident in saying that you found some of the little remaining evidence of the Wrington Vale Light Railway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrington_Vale_Light_Railway) in North Somerset.

I did indeed!  ;) :D ;D

See https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.335281,-2.735677,3a,75y,36.49h,74.76t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s1JVuhSc9ywfAh0XHt3cVXA!2e0

I assume there used to be a level crossing there on Bourne Lane - but there's absolutely no physical evidence of it. The view of the trackbed in the other direction, by the way, is completely obscured by loads of, err, manure which a local farmer seems to have piled there, so to speak.  :P ::)
