Title: Park and ride links Clifton village to the Portway
Post by: Lee on January 04, 2008, 14:55:31
Councillors will decide next week whether to go ahead with expanding the Portway park and ride scheme at Shirehampton (link below.)

Unlike the park-and-ride sites at Long Ashton and Brislington, which pay for themselves, the Shirehampton site - which is close to the M5 Avonmouth bridge and currently has 320 parking spaces - costs Bristol City Council around ^200,000 a year.

But the council expects the subsidy costs could fall following the planned expansion to provide an extra 552 car parking spaces and better signs from the motorway.

The site is also adjacent to the Severn Beach line and proposals to build a platform next to it are included in the Severn Beach Line Development Plan (link below.)

The service will operate between Shirehampton and Clifton village every 20 minutes

A new park-and-ride scheme is due to begin operating between Clifton and the Portway.

The service is being introduced by Bristol City Council ahead of the introduction of a residents' parking zone in Clifton village next March.

Some businesses have protested against the introduction of the parking zone with one hiring a tank and driving it through the streets.

The service is due to begin on Monday with buses every 20 minutes.

The park and ride will start at 07:00 from Shirehampton and run to the village until 19:15.

A similar service between Clifton and Long Ashton was introduced in April.

"It's all here, offering a quick and convenient alternative to driving into the village and fighting for parking," said Councillor Mark Bradshaw.

Mayor George Ferguson and Councillor Mark Bradshaw launching new park and ride service to Clifton

A new Park and Ride service serving Clifton Village from the Portway starts on Monday.

The Wessex 901 service has been introduced by Bristol City Council to help create stronger public transport links for commuters and visitors to Clifton Village.

The new service is the second new Park and Ride introduced to serve the Village this year, joining the Long Ashton to Clifton Village service launched by Wessex in April.

There will be a special 25 per cent discount on fares until January 2015, helping encourage people on to the service for the busy autumn and Christmas trading season.

It^s also hoped that commuters will start to make use of it in preparation for the introduction of Residents^ Parking in Clifton Village, due to start in March 2015.

Buses run Monday ^ Saturday, starting at 7am and running every 20 minutes from the Shirehampton Portway Park and Ride site, with the last bus back from Clifton Village shortly after 7:15pm. Buses stop at Black Boy Hill, Bristol Zoo, Clifton Village and Clifton Down Station.

Costing just ^3 for a peak (pre-10am) return and ^2 off-peak and Saturdays until January, the 901 will also offer discount season tickets and will benefit from Smart Ticketing.

Cllr Mark Bradshaw, Assistant Mayor for Place, including Transport, said: ^We^ve listened and responded to requests for better bus services serving Clifton, which now benefits from two Park and Ride services. It^s all here for everyone to use, offering a quick and convenient alternative to driving in to the Village and fighting for parking. I hope people are encouraged to take advantage of the introductory and season ticket offers which make this a great deal for visitors and commuters. This is a great opportunity for local businesses to work with the Council and Wessex to promote this new service for the Clifton area to employees and customers.^

Fares:
(Introductory fares until January 2015 including 25 per cent discount)
Adult (16+) return fare: Peak (before 10:00) ^3.00 Off-peak (after 10:00) ^2, All Day Saturday ^2

Sunday is a prime day for shopping and days out to places such as Bristol Zoo. It seems short-sighted not to recognise this and at least trial a Sunday service as well. Local bus and rail services are less frequent meaning far more people have to use the car into the City Centre/Clifton on a Sunday.

None of Bristol's Park & Ride services operate on a Sunday.
