Having read of some of the horror stories forum member thetrout has recounted on here while travelling, it was with some apprehension that I visited his home station of Frome today.

Once played the organ at St Mary Redcliff(e), apparently.

Not the present one recently restored by Harrison and Harrison. More likely the Renatus Harris and Byfield one of 1726 illustrated on the SMR website under History of the organs by Douglas Carrington.

Thanks for that - without it I would never have learnt about 'The Battle of the Organs', in which Renatus Harris and Bernard Smith each erected their organs and fought it out for supremacy...

You may also like to investigate the statue of Handel in Dublin, put up to commemorate the world premiere of Messiah in a music hall. It would make a great replacement door knob ......

German for 42 years of his life, naturalised British for 32 years. On balance I'd say more German than British.  ;)

By the way, I'm German born as well.

Going by percentages based on residence, I'm 98.7% British. Having only lived in Germany for 6 months. And I can't find my way around an organ, so no chance of me reciting Handel's 'Messiah'.

I'm not the Messiah. I have, in the past, been a very naughty boy though.  ;D

I suspect we can all be very grateful for that.... ;D
