Title: Day Ranger purchase - where?
Post by: grahame on March 03, 2014, 15:04:41
National Rail (about Heart of Wessex Day Ranger) tells me ...

Quote
The Heart of Wessex Day Ranger can be bought at most staffed stations across the whole of Britain or via First Great Western Telesales on 08457 000 125.

Would I also be able to buy on train if my initial joining station is unstaffed station such as Yetminster.   And is it available from TVMs?

Available on board via Avantix. I have made such a purchase myself in the past.

Not available from TVMs.

Also available from the FGW website if sufficient time is allowed for postal delivery. For free 1st Class Royal Mail delivery you need to order at least 6 working days ahead of the day of validity for a Ranger or the first day of validity for a Rover. You can however pay ^6 for next day delivery.

I think the cut off for ^6 next day delivery is 17:00 two days before the ticket becomes valid.  In other words if it starts on a Wednesday you need to order it by 17:00 on Monday so it arrives in Tuesday's post - and of course someone has to be available to sign for it.

Rover tickets (including the expensive 14 day first class all line rover) can be sold via Avantix.

Some staff however have not been trained on how to issue them and will claim they cant sell them. Yet if they look on the main screen there is a massive button saying "Rover Enquiry" or similar.

However the general advice for any rover over the floor amount is to be referred to a staffed ticket office, e.g. the ALR would come under that advice.

I guess that could be part in reluctance from the TOC to pay onboard staff the commission from selling say, an ALR?

Thanks, Gents ... helps me offer accurate advise to TransWilts users, as this ticket also covers Swindon to Westbury services.

I think its more to do with the huge amount of fraud related to on board purchases of ALR. However for obvious reasons I wont go into detail.
