Post by: basset44 on November 12, 2013, 12:58:33
Hi All,

Trying to find cheapest way on train to Luton Airport parkway from Cardiff travel up on Friday 22nd November any time have hotel in night and back on Tuesday 26th Nov

plane due to land at 14.00. I willing to wait it out in London for a couple of hours to avoid real peak time travel in no rush either way  Looking at FGW site Cardiff to Luton return is 229.00 there are no off peak if I do Cardiff to Swindon and Swindon to London and London to Luton i can get a series of Off peaks bringing it down to about 84.00 is this the cheapest?

I have tried other combinations the question I have is why there are no Off peaks from cardiff but there are from other/

Offpeak (^98) and Superoffpeak (^78) returns Cardiff <> Luton Airport Parkway are coming up for me OK at the moment on FGW's mixing deck  On the outward leg you'll possibly be affected by FCC's evening peak restrictions.

A good test of whether such fares actually exist is to start off by planning a journey on a weekend when there should be no time restrictions...

On the outward leg you'll possibly be affected by FCC's evening peak restrictions.

That shouldn't be the case. The restrictions for the outward portion of a Cardiff Central to Luton airport Parkway are:

Available on all trains departing Cardiff Central at or later than 0940 for the Super Off Peak, and

Available on all trains departing Cardiff Central at or later than 0810 for the Off Peak.

There are no further outward restrictions from London to Luton Airport Parkway on either First Capital Connect or East Midlands Trains.

On the return journey on Tues 26th November you can take any train from Luton Airport Parkway to London, but there are restrictions on the services you can use from Paddington to Cardiff Central. You can only use:

Services timed to depart London Paddington between 1010 and 1501, and from 1901 on the Super Off Peak, and

Services timed to depart London Paddington between 0810 and 1640, and from 1831 on the Off Peak.

I wasn't sure on that hence the 'possibly'.  But nevertheless there are plenty of off-peak fares on display for me, and as some trains are marked unavailable that must be a glitch?

Of course the original question was highlighting that there were no off-peak returns at all...

Thanks Both,

Tried it on my computer at home and can now see it don't know why it was not coming up in work could find it through Network Rail journey planner. I check out work again.

Another glitch I noticed when I was trying for splits on the FGW mixing desk is putting in London Terminals to Luton Airport parkway on Friday 22nd after 14.00 and return 26th after 15.00.

It comes out grey out except for singles you have to click more expensive fares for the return of 23.50 return which is cheaper than the singles shown.

I think you need to be aware of what you are looking at all times its just crazy you think the cheapest fares are shown.

Thanks again I go for the 78.00
