What a useless sign. Is it Muttley station in 15 minutes by bike one way and a railway staion by bus the other. Is it the same station, which station is it?

And where is Muttley? I tried Google and got Dastardley and a Grill Bar in West Virginia!

The two signs pointing to 'Railway Station' both give correct direction to Plymouth Station, either side of the ridge (North Road East) overlooking the south side of the station. Might cause some confusion to those who don't know the area though.

As for 'Muttley'..... let's see if anyone can work than one out.....

I confess it has me stumped. Several years ago I stayed overnight with a colleague who lived in the Mutley area of Plymouth, which led me to think at first it was a reference to that - but this is spelled differently so presumably refers to something else altogether.

I've always known Mutley with a single "T". It is correct though with the stations being in 2 directions, One way for walking, the other for those who need to observe the one way system.
I don't think it is any different in distance to walk.

Attached map shows the 2 routes the sign points, I've coloured the 2 routes in red and blue

Thanks clearer now.

North Road looks difficult to get to by both road and foot! Long time since I've been there.

Found this on Google

Mutley Plain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mutley Plain is a street in Plymouth, Devon, England. Although Mutley Plain is the main street of the dense suburb called Mutley, the term is often applied to the ...

I've just relooked at my map and I am extremely baffled why Google thinks Redruth station car park is within the area of this map. Redruth station will be TR15 2** Not the PL4 6AB it has on this map.

As I was born and raised in Plymouth (until I was 14, anyway), I can reassure our readers that it is indeed Mutley - Mutley Plain being the road which has been notorious for traffic problems ever since the invention of the infernal combustion engine, apparently.

That spelling error on the signpost is clearly the responsibility of whoever commissioned that particular sign, for either
a) specifying the wrong spelling in their order;
b) not checking the spelling from the printer when they received the proof version; or
c) allowing someone from work experience to have a go on the sign-writing equipment without supervision.

Time to fess up. The signwriters in Plymouth can rest easy.

The 'Muttley' partt of the sign is enttirely of my doing. A litttle bitt of mischievousness on my partt. Justt my warped sense of humour. Seeing whetther anyone would nottice or realise itt was photoshopped.

As already said however, the different directions to Plymouth Station are real.
