Title: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: grahame on May 12, 2013, 11:58:54 One of the unusual things about my day job is that it takes me all over the place ... and these days, I'm using the train where I can. Living in Wiltshire, there's obviously a bias in what I see towards that county, but I do get to see things away from the Great Western area too. Where were these pictures taken? For the first 24 hours, just one each please ;)

Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: Rhydgaled on May 12, 2013, 12:14:21 I'm probably wrong, but 7 looks like it might be Salisbury.
Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: SandTEngineer on May 12, 2013, 12:18:37 6. Blackfriars (Elephant and Castle end).

You're wrong in thinking you're probably wrong - you're right :D 2 - Waterloo Sorry - no - it isn't. There used to be quite a lot of stations with these destination stones, so this picture may turn out to be quite tricky! 6. Blackfriars (Elephant and Castle end). It is indeed; Blackfriars used to be one of the London stations I used when commuting to Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: JayMac on May 12, 2013, 12:28:26 0. Abutment of the original Blackfriars Rail Bridge over the Thames, as seen from Blackfriars Road Bridge.
Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: Red Squirrel on May 12, 2013, 12:29:46 I'm feeling rather foolish now - those plainly aren't LSWR destinations. What can I have been thinking? Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: Electric train on May 12, 2013, 12:50:55 No 5 Cricklewood
Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: grahame on May 12, 2013, 12:56:00 No 5 Cricklewood Correct and 0. Abutment of the original Blackfriars Rail Bridge over the Thames, as seen from Blackfriars Road Bridge. Correct - although actually taken from the South Bank walkway rather than the road bridge Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: grahame on May 12, 2013, 13:20:22 I think Manchester Victoria has some destinations (in mainland Europe) displayed in its archetecture that I wouldn't associate with that station though (that's not a guess by the way, the destinations at Manchester Victoria don't look at all like that). Ironically (for this quiz) it was the old Blackfriars that used to have an especially exotic set of European destinations, but both the Blackfriars pictures have now been guessed. It's not Manchester Victoria ... Salisbury Platform 1 - at the other side - isn't available to the public. There's just one odd platform open there - number 3. The others that are available are 2, 4 and 6. My picture was taken from platform 4 .... doing what else but waiting for the Westbury train having arrived off the train from Waterloo! Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: Southern Stag on May 13, 2013, 00:40:07 3. London St Pancras Low Level?

2. Euston (Approach Road) 10. Elstree and Borehamwood. Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: grahame on May 13, 2013, 22:28:26 ...as the 24 hours is up... Euston (Approach Road) Elstree and Borehamwood. Indeed - leaving (rather surprisingly!) number 1 to answer. The destinations listed on the stone columns at Euston include some reminders of the past, and perhaps reflect some considerable optimism in looking towards distant markets. Or perhaps not so optimistic - I can recall the days that trains ran from Waterloo to Manchester, from Waterloo to Paris, and from Paddington to Minehead and Glasgow. Is the sign saying that when the ticket office is closed you can get the same service from the gate? Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: grahame on May 16, 2013, 20:40:36 (http://www.wellho.net/pix/wqq1.jpg)
I am ... amazed ... that no-one has got that yet ... Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: thetrout on May 16, 2013, 22:45:01 We have a similar arrangement and a sign along the same lines at Frome... Although that picture is almost certainly not Frome... It looks to happy and light... :o :-X ;D
Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: Chris from Nailsea on May 16, 2013, 23:05:56 I, too, have had a constantly nagging feeling that I really ought to be able to name that location - but I can't. :-[
Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: bobm on May 17, 2013, 00:05:30 Somewhat non standard signage but I think it is Chippenham.
Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: grahame on May 17, 2013, 05:46:42 Somewhat non standard signage but I think it is Chippenham. Yes, it is indeed Chippenham. Hangs up in the roof and not on my natural sight line when I come off the train and want to get out of the statio late at night. But by that time, there's a commuter-lead flow to the gate so that anyone who's new to Chippenham gets other visual clues. Title: Re: Mostly away - where have I been? Post by: thetrout on May 17, 2013, 05:55:58 bobm beat me to it... I knew I had been to that station before and it had been bugging me for a while! Just as I fell asleep it smacked me right in the face which one it was... :D :P
Rather crafty that one as it's similar to a lot of First Capital Connect signage.
