Title: A picture quiz, but with a difference. Post by: JayMac on May 05, 2013, 18:09:30 A bit of a quizzy weekend what with thetrout's traditional picture quiz (http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=12389.0) (do have a go at the ones that are left) and, available to Frequent Posters, grahame's 'Out of order' picture quiz (http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=12391.0).
My turn to add to the fray, but with something a little different. The following picture sets are semi-cryptic sequence clues to station names. Eight of them are stations in FGW land and the remainder are from all over the UK. Just for fun, but... as always, to let everyone have a go, please just one guess each for the first 24 hours... Informed of an incorrect guess then you can have another go. So, can you guess the station name from the picture sequences? 1. Coat, (contract) bridge, Sonny (and Cher), side. ... and wouldn't 8 be Ashchurch for Tewkesbury? Also correct. Ash (tree), (Charlotte) Church, Four, Chew, Kes, (Nick) Berry. :P And I'll let giving two answers slide, as you are a relatively new forum member. I'm basing that on the noise a dog makes plus Illya Kuryakin and what I'm guessing is a Ford Escort, but I'm very aware that I'm prone to over-engineering my guesses so I'm probably way out. To be honest I had understood that instruction as per each question of the set - until afterwards, when it struck me that I might be wrong. The wording of course is not unambiguous; but such is the deliquescent solidity of meaning in our language. No doubt I should have realised what was intended; I suspect I missed it because when I read it I was thinking "I won't have time to look at that...". Albany Prison is on National Rail Enquiries. No station near it though and that three letter NLC can't be right. ALB is Albrighton. Total coincidence that the picture of the tin of gloss paint was of the 'Albany' brand. Title: Re: A picture quiz, but with a difference. Post by: devon_metro on May 05, 2013, 23:58:24 9. One of his best I think, if the groans, (when you found out the answer) were anything to go by ! Almost drowned out the station announcements at Temple Meads !

Title: Re: A picture quiz, but with a difference. Post by: JayMac on May 06, 2013, 15:26:47 British steal red car (red ones always popular with the boy racers ...) Correct. British (bulldog), (Sapphire &) Steel, red car. Well done all who took part. I've got a dozen or so more picture sequences saved. Look out for another quiz on the late May Bank Holiday weekend. Title: Re: A picture quiz, but with a difference. Post by: thetrout on May 06, 2013, 18:16:42 Look out for another quiz on the late May Bank Holiday weekend. May I suggest adding that to the forum calendar? Title: Re: A picture quiz, but with a difference. Post by: Red Squirrel on May 06, 2013, 19:53:33 ... naughty Tufty, having another go before the 24 hours were up. Oops! An honest mistake... I allowed myself to be confused by the time format; the leading zero switches my tiny squirrel brain into 24-hr clock mode, and no amount of trailing 'AM' or 'PM' is able to dislodge the idea. I promise to be more careful in future. Thanks for putting up the quiz; I really enjoyed it and I hope my transgression didn't deprive anyone of their go. :-[ Title: Re: A picture quiz, but with a difference. Post by: Chris from Nailsea on May 06, 2013, 21:36:06 Indeed: many thanks for posting that challenging variation on our usual forum quiz format, bignosemac! :D
Look out for another quiz on the late May Bank Holiday weekend. May I suggest adding that to the forum calendar? Hmm. Thanks for your suggestion, trout, but I think not. We on the admin team here are all volunteers, offering our free time to compile such things, so there is a danger that we'd set an expectation of something definitely happening by a particular date, if it were to have a diary entry - but personal circumstances might unfortunately delay its publication on this forum. :P However, I'm sure we'll all look out for bignosemac's next challenging quiz, in due course! ;D Title: Re: A picture quiz, but with a difference. Post by: JayMac on May 07, 2013, 00:29:40 Oops. Sorry for the faux pas. Thank-you for the apology. It's no great issue when the quiz was just for fun. And I can't really admonish you further for your faux pas when your mea culpa includes the the delightfully flowery term, "deliquescent solidity of meaning". I had to look up 'deliquescent'. Turns out it's nothing to do with shops that sell cured meats. :P Title: Re: A picture quiz, but with a difference. Post by: trainer on May 07, 2013, 09:25:17 As a lover of the English language (I taught it for 27 years to those who were less so), I'd like to thank stuving (oh the pain of writing proper nouns without a capital :-\) for introducing me to a new word which will now be brought out for Scrabble). The educational value of this forum never ceases to impress. :D
