Title: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: Pb_devon on April 28, 2013, 08:36:37 Why does this station (code DPT) have the county in brackets on NRE & FGW journey planner? The other communities with this name are in Australia & New Zealand ( and neither has a railway station)!
Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: paul7575 on April 28, 2013, 09:57:26 Perhaps it's to avoid confusion with Davenport?
(Stockport) Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: Pb_devon on April 28, 2013, 12:14:43 good shout!!
hadn't thought of that ::) Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: Chris from Nailsea on April 28, 2013, 14:51:25 Yes, there is some potential for confusion there, as the three-letter code for Davenport is DVN. ::)
Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: Thatcham Crossing on April 28, 2013, 19:50:24 Quote The other communities with this name are in Australia & New Zealand The Australian one is actually on the island of Tasmania. It doesn't have a railway station (there is very little rail in Tas'), but it does have an airport, mainly handling regional flights from the Australian mainland. It's three-letter IATA code is DPO. Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: Chris from Nailsea on April 28, 2013, 20:02:33 A bit of a pain, if you fly to DPO but are told upon arrival that your luggage has, most unfortunately, been sent to DPT. :P
Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: Pb_devon on April 28, 2013, 20:38:23 Ah, but the airport check-in staff, having keyed in DPT by mistake, would have bought up the FGW page which shows it's unstaffed. ;D

Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: inspector_blakey on July 29, 2013, 15:49:16 Tickets to Swindon always show "Swindon (Wilts)": there aren't any other Swindons in the country as far as I'm aware, but it's presumably to avoid confusion with Swinton (Manchester) and Swinton (S Yorks).
Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: JayMac on July 29, 2013, 16:02:34 There's Newport ((S. Wales) or occasionally (Gwent) depending on the system) to avoid confusion with Newport (Essex).
Ashford (Surrey) to avoid confusion with Ashford Intl. Ashurst Kent and Ashurst N Forest. Bramley (Hants) and Bramley W Yorks. Brampton Cumbria and Brampton Suffolk. That's just the As and Bs. Loads more where either the same name or similar spelling could lead to confusion if there wasn't an addition to the place name. Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Swindon (Cheltenham) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swindon_Village Swindon (West Midlands) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swindon,_Staffordshire There may be others - I've trained at the first and driven a narrow boat through the second! Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: bobm on July 29, 2013, 16:56:29 Ashford (Surrey) to avoid confusion with Ashford Intl. Very confusing place Ashford (Surrey); it used to be part of Middlesex and in in 1990 (after the change) the football team officially changed its name to Ashford Town (Middx).... to avoid being mistaken for Ashford in Kent. Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: inspector_blakey on July 30, 2013, 10:38:31 On that exact subject, I nearly made a very embarrassing mistake at Twickenham station the first time I ended up on crowd control duties after a rugby match...suffice it to say that all the customer needed to do was hop on a local train and go a couple of stops, not travel via St Pancras and HS1 as I suggested :-[
Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: Pb_devon on July 30, 2013, 13:18:37 Back on an international flavour, I once was buying a ticket to Evian and very nearly ended up going to Avignon ( as in 'sur le pont...'). Obviously the cockney french dialect was unfamiliar! ;D
Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: smokey on September 12, 2013, 18:31:14 I expect it's Devonport (Devon) as the next station west is offically Devonport Dockyard.
It's a long walk from Devonport (Devon) to Devonport Dockyard, well 5 minutes, ;D The Railway goes through Devonport tunnel, which has a former Railway house above (on Albert Road), and Devonport GW tunnel drains run into the former Southern Railway tunnel that crosses below. Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: paul7575 on September 12, 2013, 18:54:26 I expect it's Devonport (Devon) as the next station west is offically Devonport Dockyard. You're 4 months late on this, the differentiation is almost certainly to do with Davenport... Paul Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: Pb_devon on September 12, 2013, 19:36:29 The former railway house was demolished last year, and the site now a used car lot. The Devonport Dockyard site is so large that it is served by no less than three railway stations: Devonport (Albert Road), Devonport Dockyard, and Keyham.

Post by: rogerpatenall on September 13, 2013, 10:18:37 Public transport to Devonport (NZ) (ferries from Auckland) are run by Connex. Did they ever run buses in Devon?

The Devonport Dockyard site is so large that it is served by no less than three railway stations: Devonport (Albert Road), Devonport Dockyard, and Keyham. But I understand very few services call at these stations? Roughly a dozen a day, more for Devonport. All the Gunnislake branch trains stop, plus some peak hour Cornwall stoppers. Dockyard is a request stop for all trains. Title: Re: Devonport (Devon) - why? Post by: The Tall Controller on September 13, 2013, 18:32:25 But Devonport gets one HST every weekday!
