H Guys - as most of my trips are for business I'm not familiar with travelling in-bound into London in the afternoon/evening

The two people travelling will not be seasoned travellers so in my mind the simplest route will be from Newbury to Paddington and then via the bakerloo/jubilee lines to north greenwich

Now excuse my ignorance but if they leave (for example) newbury about 5pm is that off peak because they are not travelling in the morning peak?

So what is the cheapest way of doing this? The event (next wednesday) finishes about 10pm

THere appears to be a peak in the evening too - no off-peak fares being offered on the 1713 to PAD, Peak return ^50.50, Travelcard ^57.00

However, travel on 1652 or 1753 and off-peak return available at 22.40 each or ^26.90 Travelcard. (oddly there's a cheraper family travelcard at ^26.40, not sure of the conditions on that!)

There appears to be no return service between 2200 and 2330.....

Off-Peak tickets should be offered on the 1713. For a Newbury-London Terminals or a Newbury-London Zones 1-6 Travelcard the only outbound restriction is that you must travel at or after 0850 from Newbury. There are evening peak restrictions returning from London, where travel on certain trains is barred. If you are travelling to Newbury though it is permitted to take the direct 1706 and 1806 semi-fast services with an Off-Peak Return/Travelcard. The last restricted service is the 1915 to Swansea, so provided they return after then they can take any train.

The FGW app refused to offer me the off-peak fares on that 1713....

Thanks Guys. How far in advance can I purchase this ticket for travel on the 24th April? I seem to remember it can't be done until mid-day on the day before - is that right?

The 1713 is erroneously listed as not available on an off peak ticket. This is incorrect as Southern Stag has said.

The only viable option for the return journey is the 2330 from Paddington, change at Reading arrive Newbury 0052.

There is the option of the 2215 off Paddington, arrive Reading 2252, then 2300 to Newbury, arriving 2329. Only viable if the event finishes earlier of course.

If you have a car then another option that may be open to you is to drive to Basingstoke and travel to and from London Waterloo from there. There are far more return services late evening to chose from. Trains are direct and Waterloo to the 02 is easier.

Possible silly suggestion. But perhaps do Newbury - Westbury - Waterloo?

There is a direct service to Waterloo from Westbury around 16:30 and you'll pick up a First Advance from WSB - Z123 for probably around ^20 each (Those a singles remember!)

However I second the suggestion of the drive to Basingstoke and train from there. Once at Waterloo it's straight onto the Jubilee Line and you'll arrive at North Greenwich in less than 10 minutes. (Any Stratford or West Ham bound service will call at North Greenwich). Returning back you may also be able to pick up a Southeastern Service from Greenwich National Rail station (Different from the DLR Station which is also different from North Greenwich; bear that in mind ;) ) to Waterloo East from there it is about a 5 minute walk (all under canopy and easily found) into the main Waterloo Station ;)

Alot of the BSK - WAT Trains are also direct so no changes necessarily and would most certainly be easier for an interchange into the Jubilee Line. Infact, a few of them are final call Waterloo.

However if your friends do go into Paddington. I recommend advising a change at Baker Street from either the Bakerloo, Circle, District or H&C Lines onto the Jubilee Line. It's a sod of a station mind, but for Jubilee line, it's probably the most sensible station to change at. Whilst you can interchange between Bakerloo and Jubilee also at Waterloo. From personal experience I would strongly discourage that. There is ALOT of walking involved; especially if you're not familiar with the Underground part of Waterloo :) ;)

I suspect Trout had Praed St or Bishops Road in his mind's eye.  Indeed quite a hike.  Of course the Bakerloo and Jubilee used to be 'two sides of the Bakerloo coin' didn't they?

There is a possibility tonight's concert may be cancelled (the previous two nights have been) . My daughter has purchased an off peak travel card (^26.90) will she be able to get a refund?

Yes, but minus a ^10 administration fee. It will have to be returned to wherever it was purchased from.
