Simple question!  Can this be used by 1 Adult and 3 kids or does it have to be 2 and 2?

According to Barry Doe's annual round up of Rovers and Rangers in the new RAIL (Issue 720) it states UP to 2 adults and UP to 2 children for a family ticket (^20), so that would seem to rule out 1+3. But you can buy a child ranger for ^5.25 on its own.

Children can travel on adult tickets. It would seem logical to apply the similar rule as applies to GroupSave. That being that a child can be classed as an adult to take advantage of the offer.

That's a personal opinion mind you. But there's no harm in asking, before purchase, if you can do so.

Thanks for that, I was thinking along the same lines as BNM but I would like to see it in black and white before I try it! I e-mailed Arriva customer services at the same time as I posted but as yet deafening silence.  :-\

But be careful - with seat reservations at least, an infant cannot get a seat reservation on an adult ticket - it's very specific that a child ticket is needed:

So two adults and an infant may NOT use a "Groupsave 3" if they want to reserve a seat for the infant - they would be required to but two adult tickets and a child ticket.  Once the infant is over the age of 5, a groupsave 3 is valid for the groups of three at the price of two adult tickets, and seats can be reserved for all three ...

That quote is actually about the fact that children under five who travel for free are not entitled to a seat reservation, however if a ticket it purchased for them (adult or child) they will be able to have a seat reservation  :)

Yes, I know that's how you would think it should read - but look at what it actually says:  "for a child under 5 years of age a seat may be reserved only if an appropriate child rail ticket is held"  - it's very specific, and that's a "child ticket" and not "a ticket that a child may use".

Ah, get what you are saying! My apologies, well the same applies to the groupsave offer where children frequently travel on an adult ticket this is not very clear, so I agree.... Is this saying they must be on a child ticket or have they just left out adult ticket to avoid confusing things, it does not specifically say you can not use an adult ticket for a child

You can have a minimum of one physical adult on the groupsave 4 (4 kids traveling on adult tickets would make no difference as I had to explain once ha) however if you had a group of 1 adult and 6 children (5-15) the adult and 3 of the children could travel as adults in the group two of the children could travel for a pound each but the final child would have to be charged normal child rate as you can only have 2 ^1 tickets per actual adult
