Title: Western Rail-Road Bill
Post by: bobm on February 03, 2013, 09:37:06
Just heard a feature called "Yesteryear in Parliament" on Radio 4's Sunday morning programme Broadcasting House.

It recreates debates from past years as recorded in Hansard.

Today's was the Western Rail-Road bill, which despite it sounding like it refers to a line on the other side of the Atlantic was in fact the pre-cursor to the building of the line from Paddington.

It will be available on the iPlayer for a while - it is about 20 mins in.

The excerpt from Hansard it is based on is here http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1834/mar/10/western-rail-road#S3V0021P0_18340310_HOC_5 (http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1834/mar/10/western-rail-road#S3V0021P0_18340310_HOC_5)

I wonder if HS2 will be debated in the same way!

Its great to see the debate on railways has moved on (not) in nearly 200 years similar issues raised then as now most based on vested interests and not pragmatism

Quote
The original proposal was started last summer, he believed; the prospectuses were issued, and subscriptions were set on foot for a railroad between London and Bristol. The House was, perhaps, not aware that the amount of capital necessary to be invested in the proposal was three millions.

Ah, those were the days ...  ::)

Anyone tuning into this without hearing the introduction could well have thought it was a modern debate so good was the presentation.  Fears, lack of imagination and genuine concerns about costs are nothing new.  Presumably a Victorian coffee shop might have had enthusiasts of the stage coach heatedly discussing this wondrous new development that would see their traditional industry wiped out.  Probably not as balanced as this coffee shop of course.  ::)
