Title: Where was I today, exactly? Mind the bleddy huge gap!
Post by: JayMac on December 21, 2012, 21:05:01

Very nearly came a cropper boarding this train today. Mis-judged the step and ended up with one leg dangling in that gap.

Exact location and the rolling stock class. Bonus if you can name the timetabled service.

That looks suspiciously like a Class 150 to me... Perhaps Platform 5 at Bristol Temple Meads?? I'll lean towards a Severn Beach Line Service...

You're almost there thetrout. Right class, right station, right service. Wrong platform.  :P

And glad to see you were able to view the image without an ISP filter deciding my uploaded picture is porn!

Platform 3 indeed. I misjudged my footing helping to lift a pushchair onto the train. All the while watched by disinterested platform staff. They only became interested when they heard some loud expletives coming from me as I almost disappeared. And further interested when I stepped back onto the platform to take the picture.

I like to think I'm a seasoned traveller and I've dealt with this gap countless times without incident. But it just goes to show that if you are doing just one thing out of the ordinary (being a gentleman in this instance, helping with a pushchair) you can be caught out.

Be careful out there.

There are parts of Platform 17 at Clapham Junction where the gap is of a similar (maybe larger) size.  Everytime outside the rush hour, without fail, you will hear comments about the gap.

I even heard one young lady comment on why the driver didn't stop the train closer to the platform  ::) :D

Honestly, the youth of today.

I guarantee the gap at Newton St Cyres is greater  ;D

Why's that then?  It's hardly a bend? (GE  / SV eyeballed from bridge)

The gap is vertical rather than horizontal.

Aha TJ!

I was going to suggest that the people who converted from Broad Gauge to Narrow chose the wrong rail to move over.

 ;D

I pity anybody making a Newton St Cyres to Exton journey. They'll have only a slightly smaller step down at the other end of the journey.

You should try platform 1 at Worcester Foregate Street. I must try and get a tidy photo of the gap over the holiday period.

Down Platform (thats No One) at Bodmin Parkway is classic for a Gap on Class 150's

I had to physically manhandle an elderly lady onto the train at Stapleton Road, and off again at Lawrence Hill. She's probably still half-way up the stairs. Both cases are a huge step up.

This may say more about how my mind works than the reality of the situation, but on reading the above my mind immediately conjured up a Beryl Cook style image....

Sad to say, bnm, you are uncomfortably close to the truth. I am glad there was nobody with a camera on the scene.

The poor lady had caught one of the trains that doesn't stop at Lawrence Hill, and had been advised to change at Stapleton Road. The conductor had apparently got her off the train then. It was the first time I had caught a train to BRI from there, and I was taken aback by the height. Having to give a bunk up to someone who reminded me of my gran put the tin hat on the day.

After countless years travelling on the trains, I had a "bignosemac moment" getting on an HST at Didcot Parkway bound for Oxford.  Luckily a gentleman behind me grabbed me before I completely disappeared between train and platform.  This proved to be a huge source of amusement to my companion who proceeded to have a fit of the giggles all the way to Oxford - made all the worse by the fact we were in the quiet coach.  Then, just as we arrived at Oxford and she regained her composure, the Train Manager did the usual announcement about "mind the gap between the train and the platform edge" and she was off again.

Did I feel a fool.....
