Title: Fierce opposition to new power station in Hampshire countryside
Post by: Chris from Nailsea on October 17, 2012, 18:58:10
From the Hampshire Chronicle (http://www.hampshirechronicle.co.uk/news/9989229.Fierce_opposition_to_new_power_station_in_Hampshire_countryside/):

Quote
Opposition to controversial plans for a new power station fuelled entirely by waste in the heart of the Hampshire countryside is gathering steam.

Micheldever Action Group has organized a public meeting at Warren Hall in Micheldever Station this Saturday (October 20), starting at 11am.

Developer Clean Power Properties and Network Rail submitted a planning application to Hampshire County Council on September 20. People have until October 22 to have their say on proposals to develop the railway sidings at Micheldever Station.

The advanced conversion technology incinerator would be just 80 metres from the nearest homes and process waste 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But developers say the benefits include diverting more waste from landfill, generating renewable energy and creating up to 30 full-time jobs.

Phil Bryant, of Micheldever Action Group, said: ^We are hoping to get like-minded people to register their opposition with the county council. We think this power station is in a totally inappropriate location. This is a rural area, surrounded by fields and in the heart of the Hampshire Downs. It is very close to homes and the railway sidings are a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation."

Be prepared for the long haul.  A similar proposal for Cornwall at St Dennis has been in and out of the courts and planning processes for years......

Sounds slightly less outrageous than the one they were planning to build in the middle of Southampton!

This length of time to make a decision does no one any good (except perhaps the lawyers).  This is why Chiltern's Oxford Branch is not opening next year (or possible not even the year after), and we may run find the lights going out as early as 2016.

Update Chiltern approval finally announced http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=9825.msg119196#new (http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=9825.msg119196#new)
