Title: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: bobm on September 12, 2012, 19:39:16 From FGW Website. (http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/About-Us/Media-centre/Further-improvements-coming-soon-to-Bristol-Temple-Meads)
Quote First Great Western is to install additional ticket vending machines at Bristol Temple Meads as part of our on-going programme of improvement works. The self-service ticket vending machines (TVMs) will help to speed up the process of buying a ticket as well as allow customers to collect pre-booked travel tickets. This will take the total value of improvement works at Bristol Temple Meads to over ^500,000 thanks to the National Station Improvement Programme (NSIP) scheme. Previous work has included the renovation of station toilet facilities as well as works to improve the retail aspect of the station. The ticket vending machines are to be installed on the Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 September. NSIP is a Department for Transport backed programme, supported by Network Rail, to deliver improvements to medium sized stations in England and Wales. Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: JayMac on September 13, 2012, 15:49:40 Removing some of that bank of underused payphones may be be a good location.
Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: Chris from Nailsea on September 13, 2012, 20:39:51 From my personal observation, walking through BRI this lunchtime:
Three new Scheidt & Bachmann ticket vending machines have been installed side-by-side just outside the side entrance to the station on the old Brunel platform - the one facing the long stay car park, towards Wetherspoons. There were four S&B engineers working on them - well, to be accurate, there was one engineer working on one machine, with three other engineers watching him ... ::) Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: JayMac on September 13, 2012, 21:01:03 Seems an okay location, as long as there will be clear signage directing folk to these additional machines from the main booking hall area. Handy also for folk arriving from the Temple Quay area.
Shame they had to be Scheidt & Bachmann though and not the latest iteration of SHERE Fast^. I won't be collecting my redspottedhanky purchased tickets from a S&B machine. They have problems dealing with multiple purchases on one 'Ticket on Departure' collection code. Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: stationstop on September 13, 2012, 21:40:12 There are actually five new machines from my observations.

Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: thetrout on September 26, 2012, 01:20:31 No! Keep it obscure so we always have one to ourselves! This forum should have a like button... :-X Was thinking the exact same thing myself ;D Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: chuffed on September 26, 2012, 09:14:01 SO, you are queued up at the old machines for ages, miss your train , and see the signs to the new machines and think ..'Oh Scheidt!'..... ;D
Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: JayMac on September 26, 2012, 22:40:47 Passing through today, en route to Taunton, I took a couple of pictures:

Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: Brucey on September 27, 2012, 07:09:18 Thanks for the photos bignosemac. It is a shame the sign does not have an arrow pointing to the location, as many travellers will not know where the "Temple Quay Entrance" is located.
Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: JayMac on September 27, 2012, 07:59:47 You know what Brucey, I thought exactly the same!
I asked a member of the ticket office staff about this and was told that more permanent signage is on order, which will point folk in the right direction. Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: TonyK on September 27, 2012, 08:55:20 Passing through today, en route to Taunton, I took a couple of pictures: (http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt68/bignosemac/100_1088.jpg) Apologies if the images are a little large, I'm away from home and don't have all my usual tools to hand. Makes me laugh every time I see this sort of thing, even when it's in hospitals. Someone spends hundreds of pounds on impressive new signage, then someone else has to run off a separate note on his PC, and stick it on with sellotape (or sticking plaster, in hospitals). I still like the idea of keeping at least one TVM hidden, for forum members' use only. Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: thetrout on September 28, 2012, 01:38:19 This is somewhat related to the topic in "Bristol Commuters" as it is a picture of one of the new TVM's at the Temple Quay Side Entrance. (Mods feel free to merge if it's better there)
But there is always an "odd-ball"............... (http://b800b28968f380badea5-cc9074a6778b0478e6a17df6690d8cbe.r82.cf3.rackcdn.com/NewTicketMachine.JPG) At first I thought this was a machine that sold Severn Beach Line Tickets. But after a while, I thought that was a stupid idea. Curiosity overpowered me anyway and I poked the screen and it appears to sell the full range of tickets and a more compact design. All the other machines (Bar the ones in the main ticket hall) are of the "Blue" variety. <-- I know that's not there technical name. But after spending the past hour and 20 minutes on Rail Replacement Bustitution and having to leave for London at 6AM I don't care ;D Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: JayMac on September 28, 2012, 08:03:50 I did wonder about that odd one out. It looks like whoever was doing the carpentry wasn't expecting the smaller TVM. You can see that the wood paneling was fitted in anticipation of a full size machine.
Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: grahame on September 28, 2012, 09:08:19 ... and it appears to sell the full range of tickets and a more compact design. ... I do find myself wondering why TVMs have been so large, when they only need to provide the same facilities as an Avantix, plus the ability to print out pre-booked tickets. Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: Andrew1939 from West Oxon on September 28, 2012, 09:19:18 I assume that the new type TVM accepts payment only by cards (i.e. no cash). Cash payment was disabled on the Hanborough machine after it had been raided by thieves a couple of years ago soon after installation. However the machine still bares the legend "All cash is removed from this machine daily" which seems to be an open invitation to attack again. It lloks as though there will still be the complaiunts from people who suffer from lower back pain about having to bend down low to use the card payment device. After I received complaints about this whichj I passed on to FGW I was told that it is positioned low so that people in wheel chairs can use it.
Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: JayMac on September 28, 2012, 09:39:11 It would have been nice to see these additional machines at Temple Meads set up to accept cash. Excepting the smaller one they are all capable of doing so. It would appear that even at a station as busy as Bristol Temple Meads FGW have concerns about damage and theft from the machines. I still think they should have located them inside the door along the wall where the bank of payphones currently is. Although had they been located there then they may have caused congestion at busy times. No easy solution until the Temple Quay entrance and booking office area is redeveloped - possibly in conjunction with IEP electrification and the rumoured relaying of tracks into part of the original Brunel trainshed.
Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: TonyK on September 28, 2012, 12:02:03 It would appear that even at a station as busy as Bristol Temple Meads FGW have concerns about damage and theft from the machines. I think it's more likely that they would prefer everyone to use cards, as electrons are easier and less risky to bank than fivers. It's been a while since I last heard the cry of "Stand and Deliver!" in Bristol, but security costs money when the sums being transported get big. Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: JayMac on November 15, 2012, 01:39:10 More prominent and visible signage has now been installed in the booking hall at Bristol Temple Meads:

Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: Brucey on November 15, 2012, 17:15:14 Also, has the Travel Centre's name changed ... or has it always been labelled as "Advanced Travel Sales" and I've never noticed? ???
Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: JayMac on November 15, 2012, 17:43:01 Is that an open Temple Meads Travel Centre I see in this picture? Indeed it is! The photo was taken at 1737 this past Wednesday. My ghast was suitably flabbered. :o Maybe my many complaints and comments about erratic opening hours have worked. :-\ Also, has the Travel Centre's name changed ... or has it always been labelled as "Advanced Travel Sales" and I've never noticed? ??? It's had that name since BR days I believe. With the signs having been updated but not reworded. Title: Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads Post by: tramway on November 20, 2012, 19:21:17 Unfortunately the new machines are now so popular that at peak times the customers there now block the entrance to the station. ::)
