Title: Be safe ... Post by: grahame on July 28, 2012, 13:46:48 A reminder to everyone ... that railways should not be treated lightly / casually. There's tons of very heavy equipment moving around, very fast, and typically it can't dodge out of your way (nor stop short of you) if you get in its way.
You might think you know that there won't be a train coming along ... but you may be surprised ... keep back from the platform edge at all times! In France it seems they do things differently. This lady attempted suicide by throwing herself under a TGV, but the blast of air from the train as it passed blew her back onto the platform. Remarkable! Title: Re: Be safe ... Post by: JayMac on August 08, 2012, 19:04:53 My basic GCSE French gave me the gist of that news item, but I thought I'd run it through Google Translate to see what the literal English translation would be:
Quote A 24 year old woman escaped death Saturday night in Montpellier thanks to the mighty wind of the motor. A young 24 year old woman, who tried to 9:40 p.m. Saturday to end his life by throwing himself under a TGV station in Montpellier, "was saved by the mighty wind generated by the engine" that propelled toward the dock, it was learned Sunday from the police. The desperate young, who had left a letter explaining her actions in her handbag "left behind", "spin-off is then between a car and the platform edge, where it was pinned above the ballast "unhurt, added the same source. Unharmed but shocked, the "miracle" was released after twenty minutes of the efforts of firefighters, who used their extrication equipment, firefighters said. Train traffic at the station in Montpellier Saint-Roch was interrupted for an hour, said the staff of Public Security of the Herault. Shouldn't really laugh at an attempted suicide, but escaping death "thanks to the mighty wind of the motor" did make me chuckle. :-\ Incroyable, as they say in France. ;) Title: Re: Be safe ... http://www.loractu.fr/nancy/1847-dombasles-54-le-desespere-miracule-echappe-a-son-suicide.html A 27 year old man tried to throw himself under a train in Lorraine (northeastern France). But the blast of air from the train speeding at 150 km/hour blew him backwards, and he finished up on the ballast. He has some broken limbs but his life is not in danger. This press report says that there is about one suicide each day on the French rail network, though the SNCF refuses to confirm the figures.
