I don't know if the further information provided to FGW staff makes the reason for cancellation at Paignton, Torquay and Torre any clearer:

From what I can see, the delay on 1A81 had caused a reactionary delay on a service running from Exmouth to Paignton, which hadn't been recovered by the time the set had been to Paignton and back to Exmouth. 2T16 (1229 EXM PGN) was therefore terminated at NTA to make a right time departure for 2F12.

Passengers transferring between trains covers both set swaps, so if the train working one service is swapped with another train and all the passengers have to swap trains, and delays in passengers boarding/alighting, such as disabled passengers.

I should imagine that the reason for delay goes back to the root cause even if the train quoted was not directly affected itself but merely a reactionary reason.

Ah - right. Thanks.  Sounds like the interesting case at Westbury last summer when the incoming train from Weymouth was dividing for Bath / Bristol (should have been front portion) and Swindon (should have been rear 153).  Problem ... a 153 wasn't enough to take all the passengers (and, yes there was an adult wheelchair and LOTS of babes in wheelchairs!).   Actually the swap worked well as most people on the train had been alerted, and I suspect that both portions were right-time by destination.

Above are just from last day or so (since I started this thread).   Actually a rather better selection / better explained than I had anticipated finding from taking the occasional look;  as "one-liner"s they've probably got it about right.   I do find myself wondering if - at times - having the information technology to hand to tell us this lot makes things look like there are a lot more problems these days when that's not the case ... in my earlier life commuter days, I simply travelled on my home line not knowing of any disruption on neighbouring services.

The list also gives a peephole into the wide range of issues that have to be dealt with on a daily basis ...

Noting the number that say "earlier" in them, knock-on effect is a clear issue that (?) makes the number of significant delays and changes later in the day far higher than earlier in the day (?).   In another thread, we were discussing FGW tweet hours and wondering if they should be slid an hour earlier.   I'm thinking "probably not" ... if the passenger levels are similar, Jo and Ollie are likely to be far more useful in the evening reporting and helping on after effects that first thing in the morning when the morning specials are usually limited to a few "train late from depot" and "overrunning engineering" issues.

Last night the 19 30 Cardiff to Portsmouth Hbr started at Newport due, it was quoted as "train late from Depot".   A bit difficult to absorb at 19 30 at night when the unit comes off Fratton Depot at 06xx in the morning.

Could very easily of been a set swap at Bristol Temple Meads, or another train late from the depot, which delayed it.

Can also add "due to a vehicle striking a bridge"

Lots of unusually large passengers flowing ( ;)) about this evening on the Bristol-Cardiff corridor, due to Olympic^ football at the Millennium Stadium. So much so that FGW arranged ticket acceptance on First Buses between Bristol-Filton AW-Bristol Parkway to move passengers onto South Wales HSTs and off grossly overcrowded local DMUs. Particularly badly affected were Taunton-Cardiff services. I know because I attempted to board one at Temple Meads bound for Patchway. Gave up on that idea and took the bus alternative instead.

Not surprised, certainly a fair amount of lighting in Southampton a few hours ago.

Indeed - lightning strike earlier on affected Eastleigh panel and caused a few signal/points issues, resolved fairly quickly.

"This is due to emergency services dealing with an earlier incident." That probably means person hit by a train, but as was mentioned above, it's been far too frequent of late and constant use of "person hit by a train" looks bad on them.

Also "debris on the line" and "trespasser on the line" / "due to an earlier trespass incident."

We quite often see delays "due to a passenger being taken ill".   Unfortunately someone onboard an early morning Arriva Trains Wales service from Cardiff to Milton Haven was initially taken ill and then died today at Port Talbot Parkway.  No more details but thoughts with the deceased's family and the crew and fellow passengers on the service.

A long, long time ago. .  . they had blackboards. The top half was printed 'We are sorry that trains are running late due to' . . .  and underneath, on the blackboard half, was written 'delay'. Took a photo, but can't find it .

Last night, 1701 HST Oxford to London Paddington sat at P1 until 1725ish with 'delayed' on the CIS. Only announcement (automated) was "this train is delayed due to a problem that is being investigated"

Happened to a former friend and colleague, many years ago. When he didn't get home on time, this being before the internet, his wife rang Temple Meads to ask if there was a delay. She was told yes, because someone had died. As she hung up, she saw two BTP officers walking up the path...

I'm sure similar would not happen today.

Not a good morning for London passengers to the far west:

Not so good for Swindon passengers, some of whom were sent to Reading to catch the second train after the cancellation of the first .....

Not a good day, with a derailed train, a broken down train, and a trespass incident all causing current problems. Last night, we had signalling problems at Wokingham, and flooding at Temple Meads. All four reasons in one day. (Well, five actually).

Where is the derailed train?

According to staff I spoke to it was part of one power car inside Old Oak Common. Other trains trapped behind it too.

Journey check says "Train Fault".    Rumour suggests "Broken Windscreen Wiper". Is that sufficient to cause a couple of trains to be cancelled?  (Hope they fix it for the 17:36 off Swindon, which is running 'nearly every seat taken' already!)

I am wondering if there has been a software upgrade for Journeycheck as some of the reasons have been slightly changed and made a bit more customer friendly.

I didn't know that happened these days.

Quite often on FGW the last train of the night on a branch line will be held if the main line service is running late (within reason).

There are other places where it happens.

The Swindon to Gloucester/Cheltenham trains will usually be held at Swindon during the day if the services from London are no more than 8-10 minutes late.

Electrification has come sooner than expected.    FGW Journey Check shows 15 12 Bristol Parkway to Weston super Mare has been delayed by 10 mins at Bedminster due to OHLE problems.     Suspect this could be the root cause and it has been delayed by a XC which has travelled from the wires.

Couple more I've not seen before (I don't think).   Perhaps there's a free type option now?

There's a couple of trains that are a carriage down this morning (different diagrams) and the 07:49 (at Melksham) TransWilts turned up with 2 carriages rather than one ... something being checked on all 153 units?

P.S.  +9, -0 @MKM -> 35 ... 35/9 ... but NOT a typical morning.  Currently in Coach B of the 08:17 Chippenham to Bath and Bristol - just over a dozen people in the carriage when I would normally expect it to be pretty busy.

So, tbf, probably nowt more than a manual keying error, but amusing notheless :)

There really was tarpaulin/plastic sheet that had blown on to the OHLE, when that was cleared a tree came down near Castle Cary that was too big for the driver to move. 
As the incidents happened within a short space of time, the attributer probably got the cause mixed up.

Further to a comment elsewhere - indeed refreshing to see extra information.


Alas, I'm guessing that Tiverton Loop is to allow a faster train to pass and not for passenger purposes  :-\

Personally, I find the extra data very informative and regret the disappearance of things like "Last report - Thingley Junction" on Webtis screens.  Yes, I do understand that 3 out of 5 don't know where Thingley is.

Tiverton Loop does have (long disused) platforms alongside - It's the former Tiverton Junction station.

In the end, the Tiverton Loop stop was not used and the 09:00 Cardiff Central to Plymouth ran 2 minutes ahead of a (also late running) XC HST which itself was just 2 minutes ahead of a late running GWR HST.

I'm surprised that the Class 2 Cardiff-Plymouth wasn't held at Taunton, Tiverton Loop or Exeter to allow the XC HST to pass. Maybe the 1006 from PAD could have been let through too.

However, that may have put the 0900 GWR Cardiff-Plymouth into a 1 hour plus delay. Meaning compensation for passengers. Perhaps GWR colluded with Network Rail to keep it ahead of the Class 1s and below the 1 hour threshold...

Cynical? Moi?  :P

I think this is to recover from a planning error.   If you look on Real Time Trains the service is missing.  I guess the only way to show it was by introducing some form of alteration, in this case a late start - and the minimum delay you can have is 1 minute.  It is also missing for tomorrow night.

Very late to follow up ... but this has a similarity to recent events at Salisbury where 153 units are restricted to even numbered platforms at present and the head code of the train needs changing.  The old service (with a 150 or 158) shown as cancelled, and the 153 service with new data shown as running a minute later.

How a-llaming!

I'm used to delays in the evening going home to Bookham. Normally on time or 2 or 3 minutes late but last nights delays were a little bit longer than normal but that was due to signal failures at or near Clapham Junction. Or so I thought.....


Incidentally Effingham Junction is the next station on the line from Bookham.

I can help here. The llama is a quadruped which lives in the big rivers like the Amazon. It has two ears, a heart, a forehead, and a beak for eating honey...

It is also bigger than a frog .

If you see one where people are swimming, you must shout "Cuidado! Llamas" - look out, there are llamas.

Although the ones I saw last month in Argentina seemed placid enough.

Rather expensive to buy one .. was going to call it alarm analeg !

Also, I don't think I saw "overcrowding due to the operator refusing to use loco-hauled stock to increase capacity and blaming everything on the lack of extra DMUs for them to lease" on the list.

Also worth remembering, they are larger than frogs.

All posted this morning, so presumably a set swap for this diagram as a result of a signalling problem this morning.

Or probably a lack of set-swap and the same unit without working facilities will be used on those services. "Due to more than the usual number requiring repairs at the same time"

Maybe it was late due to a signal fault, and didn't have time to get the tank drained and now the toilet tank is full?

I was told today in the West there were 64 units to cover 64 diagrams with no spares.  So on days like that providing it is safe to put in traffic it is going to run even if it means no working air cooling, toilets or short-formed.

It also means that if a unit hasn't got a maintenance exam due to ending the day in the wrong place because of disruption it isn't going to be going out to play the next day - hence the rather curious messages on Journeycheck.

I received a text message last Thursday, informing me that the 18:20 BRI to NLS would not call at its destination due to 'the train manager being taken ill.'

Hopefully, that member of staff will have recovered by now - but it's the first time I've seen that offered as a reason for delay / cancellation?

The 7.08 Maidenhead to Paddington was cancelled this morning 'due to a fault on this train'. This was declared early on its route so I had time to check the intended path and it would appear that the fault was a nasty case of maidenheaditus because the train managed to call at every other stop, and clattered through the platform about 8mins later than intended. Obviously it didn't stop as it had 'a fault'.

Can anyone explain a fault that only affects one station stop?()

* a failure of selective door opening mechanism against a short platform
* less passenger space available than normal (faulty carriage), stop removed to avoid overcrowding
* delay early on journey due to fault, skipping a stop to get back on time
* Substitution of faulty train by different type not cleared for platforms (e.g. Platform 3 Salisbury, class 153!)
* Stop would be at bottom of a climb and train running on limited power (e.g. Totnes)

Not sure which / if any of these could apply in your case.

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but is Real Time Trains a definitive source for what happened on a given day? This past Saturday (19th August 2017), the eastbound Pembroke Coast Express (10:01 Pembroke Dock to London Paddington) was poorly. The station announcments at Carmarthen were saying the train was delayed 'due to a train fault' and, sure enough, the engine in one of the power cars seemed to be dead (the power car was making noises, but none of them sounded like a diesel engine to me).

My question is what did FirstGWR do about it? The station announcements were saying that the train will not call at Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot Parkway and Bridgend today, suggesting that the stops had been pulled to help the service make up time. However, Real Time Trains is saying (http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/C23728/2017/08/19/advanced) that the train did call at Swansea (12 minutes late); and was then cancelled. Which is right, the platform announcments or Real Time Trains?

RTT is usually correct - only usually wrong if a manual report has been made erroneously.  Looks like 1L62 terminated at Swansea and was then restarted using another set at Cardiff (as 1Z62), so both sources are correct.  I suppose you could say it said it wasn't calling at Swansea but it did, but in terms of departing passengers it didn't, IYSWIM?

Ok, so RTT is probably correct in this case, thanks for the reply.

But, for any passengers at Carmarthen bound for Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot or Bridgend who heard the announcement it was incorrect since they may have decided unecessarily to remain at Carmarthen to await a train that was calling at those places. Also, it may have given passengers false hope that they could get to Cardiff (and Paddington) on the partly-failed set rather than being stuck in Swansea.

Definately a misleading announcment (so the 'smoke and mirrors' board at least is an appropriate place for this). I'm supprised there was a set available to restart the service at Cardiff, since GWR's depot in south Wales is at Swansea they'd be more likely to find a spare set there I would have thought.

There was an empty HST running from Bristol to Landore which was stopped at Cardiff to form 1Z62 with a slightly late start.

That's what I call quick thinking and providing a good service as that would have caused inconvenience to do that but that's what should be happening...putting passengers first.

Ah, that explains it; thanks. A good bit of luck for passengers from Cardiff towards Paddington.

As well as an available train, you also need available crew as well of course.  I this case it looks like it all fell reasonably into place.

Honeybourne gets missed out if an HST has only one power car working.

I can recall being on a slam door train many years ago from Paddington that overshot / forgot to stop at Acton Main Line. The train came to a halt shortly after and then reversed back to Acton ML. I'm not sure that would be an acceptable practice today.
