Title: Dean and Tisbury - Help sought Post by: grahame on July 02, 2012, 10:22:48 I'm helping with a website that's covering all the stations in Wiltshire - a profile for the community that each serves. Quite happy with my coverage of Swindon to Sailsbury inclusive, but I would really appreciate help inputs on Dean and Tisbury, neither of which I know particularly well, nor do I have good contacts there to ask.
Examples: Quote Avoncliff is a village which nestles in the valley of the river Avon between Bradford-on-Avon and Bath, where the railway, the Kennet and Avon Canal and the river share the valley. The Avoncliff Aquaduct, a masterpiece of engineering, designed by John Rennie, carries the canal over the railway and high across the river to span the valley, and Avoncliff station is reached by steps from the footpath that shares the aquaduct. A narrow no through road gives acces to the station, and across the valley a steep hill drops another no through road down to the village itself. Avoncliff is a very popular spot for walker, and for boats. A pub and a cafe are open all year (hours may be limited in winter) and provide a great variety of food and drink. -------- Bradford-on-Avon is an ancient town, with evidence of habitation dating back to Roman times, and a bridge over the river Avon dating back to Norman times. It was the site of a skirmish in the Civil War in 1643. Much of its history is well preserved, and these days Bradford-on-Avon is a town with a population of some 10,000 that's well worth visiting - there are quaint shops, historic buildings including the tithe barn, the Kennet and Avon Canal and more. Bradford on Avon Station is a few hundred yards from the toen centre, on the opposite side of the river, and is an excellent place to park your car if you're wanting to take the train into Bath ... or why not do the reverse - come to Bradford-on-Avon by train and walk along the Canal to Avoncliff station to the West or Trowbridge station to the East? Title: Re: Dean and Tisbury - Help sought Post by: 6 OF 2 redundant adjunct of unimatrix 01 on July 02, 2012, 19:20:31 Tisbury is south wiltshires smallest town,it is at the commercial heart of the cranborne chace area of outstanding natural beauty and has a good selection of shops and services, the town is served by an hourly south west trains service between exeter st davids and london waterloo via salisbury (extra services between yeovil and london run at peak times) travel time from tisbury to london is below 2 hours, and a weekly standard 7 day season ticket is 128 pounds...salisbury is only 15 mins away, it is also worth pointing out that tisbury is in the network railcard area, the station itself is staffed during the week in the mornings and until 10 on saturdays.
road wise the town is placed roughly 3 miles away from both the a30 and a303,and westbury is roughly a 30 min drive for alternative rail services into paddington and the westcountry Title: Re: Dean and Tisbury - Help sought Post by: tramway on July 05, 2012, 17:17:10 Also if you are unfortunate enough that you missed your stop for connections at Salisbury and find yourself in Tisbury, the Slaughtered Lamb close to the station does a decent pint while you wait the hour for your return trip. If you are really unfortunate and you wait takes you past 23.59 then they have rooms. ;D

Has a new pub opened ? or an existing one been renamed ?
