Title: Away on holiday - can you help work out where we have been?
Post by: grahame on May 23, 2012, 20:01:06
We're on our holidays, but having trouble remembering where we took these snaps.   Can you help us?   Thanks

8. Dovey Junction

Yes - and if anyone needed it, that will more or less set the area..

Any rules re number of guesses?  :D

Nope - I haven't set any. As many or as few as you like!

Well, as you say that does indeed rather set the area. West/North Wales

Have you had any trips on some of the narrow gauge stuff in that neck of the woods?

I'll hazard a guess that 4. is Barmouth Bridge. More specifically the point at where part of it used to swing.

2. Aberystwyth
3. Ditto vernacular railway?
4. as 3?
5. Borth?
7. Porthmadog?
9. Conwy / Stevenson's Bridge?

Any luck on these?  ???

No, 5 isn't Borth (I did the honourable thing of posting before checking Google Maps!)  :D

Ha Ha, been a long day and couldn't be arsenaled to check! Yes, in Wales, it's the vernacular.  ;D

2. Correct - Aberystwyth (Devon Big Bird)
4. Correct - Barmouth Bridge (BigNoseMac)
8. Correct - Dovey Junction (BigNoseMac)

Other guesses are incorrect - sorry!

1. Correct - flooring on an ATW class 158 (anthony215)  (funny, I thought it was a picture of two dogs!)
5. Correct - Morfa Mawddach (Worcester_Passenger)

3, 6, 7 and 9 to go.

7 Corris Steam Railway at .....er Corris ;D
9 Viaduct over the A470 between Pont-y-Pant and Betws-y-Coed

Correct on 7 - The Corris at Corris (SandTEngineer)

Incorrect on 9, though.

Clue - we've not been north of Barmouth, nor down to South Wales.

9 Knucklas Viaduct (Central Wales Line)...Second attempt at Welsh viaducts :P

6 LLyngwril station (between Tywyn and Barmouth)
9 Knucklas Viaduct (Central Wales Line)...Second attempt at mid-Wales viaducts :P

Both correct - Llwyngwril and Knucklas.   Slightly suprisingly, it's number 3 that's left as the last to be guessed (I was thinking Llwyngwril would be really tough!)

Spot on there.

There's real rail variety in midWales - that probably doesn't come as a huge surprise to many members!

Gypsy and Billy: two quite remarkable dogs. I've had the pleasure of meeting both of them. See http://www.wellho.net/mouth/3625_An-update-on-Billy-the-Greyhound-and-Gypsy-the-Lurcher.html  ;)

Thanks, Chris .... we're a bit biased about them  ;)

Back very late yesterday - 7 hour delay due to equipment failure - but it gave us a chance to have another day on the Welsh coast, which allowed to take enough extra pictures to make a second quiz section:

I don't think there are any repeated venues ...   and especially for Anthony215 and the Welsh contingent:

Number 2 "Any unattended luggage may be damaged or destroyed by the security services"   ;D ;D

Yeah - I think that looks worse than it actually was - crowds of sunseeking youths on holiday just detraining from the two-hourly service from the Midlands.  I suspect the owner was just out of shot.

Very little reaction to these pictures - perhaps I should have started a separate thread.   I'll label 'em all up tomorrow if no-one comes back further.

Correct, Maespoeth on the Corris - but the rear locomotive is "Sir Haydn" - a Talyllyn locomotive making a guest appearance!

And here's the full list.

1. Penhelig
2. Aberdovey
3. Machynlleth
4. Dolgoch (Talyllyn)
5. Towyn Wharf (in museum - Guiness Brewery Engine from above)
6. Borth
7. Maespoeth
8. near site of Abertafol station (class 158 / Arriva / unrefurbished)

Back to FGW land next time, I think!
