Title: New Ranger/Rover ticket coming soon - Cotswold Discoverer Post by: JayMac on April 05, 2012, 18:31:30 A new Ranger/Rover ticket called Cotswold Discoverer is being introduced covering the Cotswold and Golden Valley Lines. There's a 1 Day Ranger type ticket and a 3 Day (consecutive) Rover type ticket. Not sure when it will become available, but an educated guess would be around the time of the next fares database update on May 20th.
It also includes unlimited bus travel across the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Details of bus services the Cotswold Discoverer can be used on can be found here (http://www.cotswoldsaonb.org.uk/?page=transportpublications). NOTE: I cannot confirm validity on all the services listed through that link. Do check with bus operators if you plan to travel with this Ranger/Rover. The specific rail validity is services between Oxford - Moreton in Marsh and Swindon - Ashchurch for Tewkesbury via Stroud/Gloucester. It is not valid between Oxford and Swindon. Prices: ^10 Adult, ^5 Child and ^8.30 Railcard for the 1 Day Ranger. ^25 Adult ^12.50 Child and ^20 Railcard for the 3 Day Rover. Time validity on trains is after 0850 Mon-Fri, any time weekends and bank holidays. Valid any time on buses. No publicity as yet from either First Great Western or National Rail Enquiries. ::) I've gleaned this information from the independent GB Rail Rover Guide. http://railrover.org/pages/cotswold-discoverer.html NOTE: Edited to include updated link to bus timetables and to clarify that the Cotswold Discoverer is not yet on sale. Title: Re: New Ranger/Rover ticket coming soon - Cotswold Discoverer Post by: bobm on April 05, 2012, 19:21:11 Always nice to see a new Rover ticket. I'm off on the first day of an 8 in 15 Freedom of the SW tomorrow.
It is not valid between Oxford and Swindon. Being in Swindon it is frustrating there seem to be no rovers valid east of Swindon - except of course the All Line Rover. I suppose with this new Rover I could get to Oxford via Ashchurch, a bus and Moreton-in-Marsh to pick up another rover there!! Title: Re: New Ranger/Rover ticket coming soon - Cotswold Discoverer Post by: Btline on April 05, 2012, 22:38:04 That's a bit bizarre having 2 unliked rail routes. Why not extend to Worcester and down to Ashchurch from there?

Title: Re: New Ranger/Rover ticket coming soon - Cotswold Discoverer Post by: JayMac on April 06, 2012, 04:30:12 Did wonder that. I've edited my OP to reflect the fact it is not yet on sale.
I assume it'll go into retail systems come the next update to the fares database on May 20th - NFM 12? Title: Re: New Ranger/Rover ticket coming soon - Cotswold Discoverer Post by: grahame on April 06, 2012, 07:51:41 It's worth noting that this ticket isn't actually for sale yet.. Although the bus timetables that the links take you to are for June to December 2010 Title: Re: New Ranger/Rover ticket coming soon - Cotswold Discoverer Post by: Btline on April 06, 2012, 12:49:10 They are linked. >:(By bus! Title: Re: New Ranger/Rover ticket coming soon - Cotswold Discoverer Post by: 6 OF 2 redundant adjunct of unimatrix 01 on April 06, 2012, 13:17:23 It's available on the system with certain railcard discounts, I'm not great on that area but is there not a Cotswold railcard?
Title: Re: New Ranger/Rover ticket coming soon - Cotswold Discoverer Post by: JayMac on April 06, 2012, 18:01:50 Although the bus timetables that the links take you to are for June to December 2010 I have edited my OP to link to Cotswold AONB bus timetables that are current until June 2012. The link to bus timetables provided by http://railrover.org/pages/cotswold-discoverer.html has also been updated. http://www.cotswoldsaonb.org.uk/?page=transportpublications Now.... as to availability to purchase.... Relex109 says it's available, Ollie says it isn't.... Title: Re: New Ranger/Rover ticket coming soon - Cotswold Discoverer Post by: 6 OF 2 redundant adjunct of unimatrix 01 on April 06, 2012, 22:29:14 But being available to sell and being able to sell are two very different things,we have not been briefed on it (out of area) and its unlikely that we will ever sell it but it's deffo on our system, both the 1 day and 3 day version
Title: Re: New Ranger/Rover ticket coming soon - Cotswold Discoverer Post by: JayMac on April 06, 2012, 22:32:56 Webmaster at GB Rail Rover Guide has said elsewhere that he's removed the details of the Cotswold Discoverer from his website until such time as it becomes available to purchase. It's no longer listed in the index, but the actual page is still loading..... for the moment.
Title: Re: New Ranger/Rover ticket coming soon - Cotswold Discoverer Post by: 6 OF 2 redundant adjunct of unimatrix 01 on April 06, 2012, 22:42:52 This brings up a point.... Is it on the manual? If it is and had no mention of when it goes on sale it could be sold
Title: Re: New Ranger/Rover ticket coming soon - Cotswold Discoverer Post by: JayMac on April 06, 2012, 22:45:54 Not in 'The Manual'. Yet.....
Title: Re: New Ranger/Rover ticket coming soon - Cotswold Discoverer Post by: Ollie on April 07, 2012, 01:41:26 It is in systems ready to go, but an issue has to be sorted until it can actually get sold. I will update here when I find out it is possible to sell :) (allowed to sell)
Title: Re: New Ranger/Rover ticket coming soon - Cotswold Discoverer Post by: dzug on April 10, 2012, 09:28:23 They are linked. By bus! If you look at the detail of the bus services you'll see that, whilst that is not actually a lie, it's not usefully true either. Virtually every journey between the two lines needs a change, often multiple Leaving aside the question of what journeys it's actually valid on, which I would hope would be properly defined before it goe on sale. I can't see it being valid on the Coventry Stratford on Avon service for example - but that's in the AONB timetable. I would expect it to be the services the AoNB directly or indirectly sponsors. Title: Leave the car at home to explore the Cotswolds Post by: Chris from Nailsea on May 02, 2012, 21:52:05 From The Oxford Times (http://www.oxfordtimes.co.uk/news/9677448.Leave_the_car_at_home_to_explore_the_Cotswolds/):
Quote A new bus and rail rover ticket designed to encourage people to explore the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty without a car has been launched. The Cotswold Discoverer ticket is available in one-day and three-day versions and is valid on trains between Oxford and Moreton-in-Marsh on the Cotswold Line and between Swindon, Stroud, Gloucester, Cheltenham and Ashchurch, and on bus services across the Cotswolds, including the No 853 Oxford to Cheltenham route. The ticket will be on sale until October on a trial basis. It was developed by the Cotswolds Conservation Board in conjunction with train operator First Great Western, Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire county councils and bus operators. If the idea proves a success this summer, the conservation board hopes that the transport firms will take over its operation in future years. The Discoverer is available seven days a week, throughout the day (but is not valid on trains on weekdays until 8.50am), and can be bought at any railway station and on board participating buses, which also include RH Transport^s X9 Witney-Charlbury-Chipping Norton route and the firm^s C1 Charlbury railbus and X8 Kingham railbus services. Bus connections from Moreton-in-Marsh railway station, just over the Gloucestershire boundary, allow passengers from Oxfordshire to travel as far as Cheltenham, Cirencester and Stratford-upon-Avon using the ticket. A one-day adult ticket costs ^10 and a three-day adult ticket ^25. Reductions are available with railcards and fares are half-price for children under 16. Quote Cotswolds Discoverer pass launched (http://www.cotswoldjournal.co.uk/resources/images/2948705.jpg?type=articleLandscape) Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP, Teresa Ceesay (First Great Western Cotswold Line stations manager), Jo Burgon and Andy Pulham A public transport rover ticket for the Cotswolds could be expanded to become a pass for the region, including admission to visitor attractions. After a successful two-year-trial period, the Cotswolds Discoverer pass is to become a permanent product. The ticket, which is available for one day or three days, includes rail travel from First Great Western stations between Oxford and Moreton, and between Swindon, Stroud, Gloucester, Cheltenham and Ashchurch for Tewkesbury, and from Gloucester to Yate. It is valid on buses including the 801 between Moreton, Stow, Bourton and Cheltenham, the 21, 22 and 23 between Moreton and Stratford-upon-Avon and the X8 and X8A Kingham railbus routes. Nicola Greaves, the information and interpretation officer of the Cotswolds Conservation Board, which has led the project, told a launch event last Friday: "We have been very encouraged by the results of the trial. We now want to grow the scheme, make more people aware of it and get more people to use it and we would also like to see it grow to become more of a Cotswolds pass as well, bringing in visitor attractions." Conservation board member Jo Burgon, who is chairman of the steering group for the pass, said: "This isn't just about inviting people into the Cotswolds. It's not just a tourist pass, it's for local residents as well, and should help them to discover the Cotswolds themselves but also to venture out of the Cotswolds from time to time." And Mr Burgon added that he hoped making a success of the Cotswold Discoverer could help to improve rural bus services. He said: "One of the great challenges is the weekends, because there are very few Sunday bus services, so I'm hoping that one of the outcomes of this will be sufficient demand that it will become more economically viable to increase the number of services, so that weekend visitors can benefit from this pass." Andrew Pulham, a director of Pulham's Coaches in Bourton said: "It has been great to see that it's not just tourists using the ticket. We have seen great advantages for local people being able to reach attractions and also getting out further afield from the Cotswolds to places like Oxford. Since the scheme was launched, our sales alone are in excess of 400 tickets." Cotswolds MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown said: This is a great initiative, getting integrated transport, getting people out of their cars is a fantastic modal shift. It's envirommentally-friendly and exactly what we want in the Cotswolds." A one-day Cotswolds Discoverer pass costs ^10 (^5 for children) and the three-day version ^25 (children ^12.50). Discounts are available for holders of national railcards, except the Family Railcard. The pass can be bought at railway stations and on participating buses.
