Any reasons for the ridiculously large increases on the St Ives line?

Ticketing changes?

"Switch to point-to-points from St Ives Bay Line Ranger"

As mentioned in the associated report from the ORR that attempts to explain the reasons for major changes.

almost 100000 increase combined for all the Falmouth branch stations excluding Truro. The loop at Penryn is definitely showing it was money well spent.

On the St Ives branch I think all tickets used to be sold as rangers so intermediate stations were not counted.

but St ives has increased by 100000 and st erth 50000 as well so that suggests the terminal stations were not counted neither!

That's what I said earlier - it was a cut and paste from ORR's report, so I've clarified the post...

I don't suppose you happen to have a copy of those already as a CSV/DSV/TSV that I could have please Graham? (I think you may know roughly where I'm going with this)

where is Sampford Courtenay?

Last stop before Okehampton. Amazing anyone has booked there, though, having said that, most of the small number of Coombe Jn bookings were from far away - prankster rail enthusiasts (never!).  Selby and Birmingham New St, as I remember.

Let's see:
figures from 2004 to 2011 at http://www.wellho.net/resources/ex.php4?item=h309/railstats.txt
same data with tabs rather than expanded spaces (i.e. a tsv file) at http://www.wellho.net/data/railstats.xyz

There's all sorts of other data in the ORR figures too

I've also emailed you the above (actually all UK stations) tab delimited which is easier to work with than the multispace stuff above in this threas.

Superb thanks! I thought the figures were hiding on your website somewhere, but couldn't find them. :)

Farnborough North seems down a lot. However the figures there are inaccurate- most tickets are sold as "Farnborough Stations" so would be lumped in with SWT's Farnborough Main.

Not necessarily.  At the very least they should pick up TVM sales from Farnborough North, because the ticketing systems will know the real location rather than what is printed.  But they will know a much more accurate figure for sales at Farnborough Main, and they can use this to work out Farnborough North. especially as it is a simple two station fares group.

They explain how they deal with this on pp 25/26 of the report (via the linked page above).  Basically they use the ratio of tickets actually sold from the individual stations as a proxy for those fares sold to the group of stations from elsewhere.  This process has changed over the last few years, and although there was a period when all sales were associated with the named group station, that is not the case currently.

I didn't know they used figures from the TVM's themselves.

I wonder if the fact that in the past 12 months the TVM at Farnborough North has seemingly been broken more often than not has impacted on the overall figures.

The recent RPI stings have also shown what a high number of people will 'chance it' and not bother with a ticket at all.

I've seen more recent figures than this, which reflects more accurate figures at EXC and TRU.

Interesting map here plotting stations with and increase and those with a decrease: https://viz2.cartodb.com/tables/station_use_2010_11/embed_map .  The guardian have done something similar.

The figures for the first years footfall based on the gateline at Truro have put it at around 1.75 million.

Great to see such improvements at many of the stations, with well over half achieving growth of more than 10% - even Melskham!   ;)

My own personal favourite, Bicester Town, followed up it's huge increase of 75% last year with another increase of more than 50% this year!

As last year, I've produced my own spreadsheet to make the data a little easier to digest.  FGW stations only, and listed first alphabetically, and then by percentage increase.  One slight error I've managed to not spot in time is that the % increase columns are from this year against last year, rather than two years ago as the column heading states.

Quite impressive figures at Dean and Mottisfont & Dunbridge over four years.  I wonder how much of that is down to it becoming a generally hourly service Mon-Sat since SWT took the service on?

Is it generally considered that having an hourly service all day makes a significant difference to passenger numbers, AIUI it was two hourly offpeak previously - so was that insufficent for discretionary travel such as mid-day shoppers, or for evenings out?

Yet another presentation - graphically over the years.

Here you go for BA (Bath) postcodes - replace the BA with any other UK letter(s)

I must admit, I do love Graham's graphical representations, which are good fun to play with.  Despite the figures having to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Check out my favourite Bicester Town - it literally goes off the graph!  Oh, and second largest increase over the last six years in Oxfordshire?  Go little Finstock, go!
