Title: QR Codes Post by: grahame on January 29, 2012, 17:44:19 QR codes are the two-dimensional barcodes that you can wave your mobile phone at and get taken straight to the URL in describes. They're really intended for printed pieces (you can see them on the pocket timetables for example), but I've put one on the top of the pages of this site ...
* If you have a printout of a page - or someone else has - they'll be able to get here quickly * If someone has a mobile phone and you want to give them our URL you can just have them wave the phone in the direction of this page. Please help me gauge how useful this is by completing the poll at the top of this page. Thanks! I've got a mechanism which will tell me in the web server logs where someone has arrived via the QR code ... I have my guesses as to how many that will be shorter and longer term, but time will tell. The /qr/index.html page can be forced to redirect to the homepage, so the user is none the wiser as to what has actually happened. The <body> tag can be edited like this... Code: <body onLoad="javascript:pageTracker._setVar('qr');"> Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: Chris from Nailsea on January 29, 2012, 18:17:41 Erm ... could you possibly add another option to your poll, please, grahame?
Something on the lines of "I haven't the faintest idea what you're on about, so I'll have to ask my teenage son to show me how it works" ... :P :-[ ::) Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: JayMac on January 29, 2012, 18:47:06 I have a mobile phone, but rather surprisingly these days I use it only to make and receive telephone calls and send the odd text message. Those are the pretty much all the functions it has.
Not sure which option in the poll is best for me..... maybe the last one can be changed to "I do not have a QR reading mobile device." Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: Andrew1939 from West Oxon on January 29, 2012, 18:54:20 I agree - I had no idea what a QR code is but when I saw the example I realised I had seen it before.
I have a simple mobile phone - a throw out by my daughter who has gone from a Blackberry to an I-Phone but I only use my phone when I need to make a call when I am out. I use ASDA that works on the Vodafone network and costs only 5 pence a minute to use - by far the best value for a casual user - a ^5 credit lasts me over a year! Whilst I see people in the street seemingly with a mobile glued to their ear, from what I can understand nearly all my friends, have a phone use profile similar to mine, i.e. they just use when they occasionally need to use it. Something on the lines of "I haven't the faintest idea what you're on about, so I'll have to ask my teenage son to show me how it works" ... :P :-[ ::) I think that's just a severe case of "I have not come across QR codes" ;) I have a mobile phone, but rather surprisingly these days I use it only to make and receive telephone calls and send the odd text message. Those are the pretty much all the functions it has. Not sure which option in the poll is best for me..... maybe the last one can be changed to "I do not have a QR reading mobile device." I have changed it an that direction (within the character space I'm allowed) .. and note that CLPG has made a similar request. Hope that answers both of you. Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: Phil on January 30, 2012, 08:03:09 I vote for colourful ones :)

I for one saw the QR code and immediately scanned it!QR codes are interesting, as you say, they have more of a place in printed pieces to allow you to access data quicker. FGW used them on posters to allow "instant" timetable download which is a good use; it only takes a few seconds out of your time to download the timetable. I will be interested to see where QR codes get used now. (For those who don't know, they can hold much more information than a "barcode") Will they be used in stock distribution, shop products? Can we have a plain, English language translation for that QR? As the current poll results show, more than 50% of the respondents don't have, or don't use QR reading technology. ::)
Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: Bristolboy on January 30, 2012, 21:28:27 Use them but not in this case. Use mobile devices (phones and tablets) instead of a computer so the qr code at the top is very limited in functionality!
Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: TerminalJunkie on January 30, 2012, 21:32:11 Can we have a plain, English language translation for that QR? Where would be the fun in that? (Hint: You could just click 'quote' and read it!) As the current poll results show, more than 50% of the respondents don't have QR reading technology. ::) Really? When I saw your post it said: Quote Yes, I do - 15 (50%) Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: Phil on January 30, 2012, 21:33:56 Now, TJ. Can we have a plain, English language translation for that QR? As the current poll results show, more than 50% of the respondents don't have, or don't use QR reading technology. ::) AFAIK it's: You could at least have corrected the spelling as well - it should have been ^Your quote came out a little off.^ not ^You^re quote came out a little off^ Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: JayMac on January 30, 2012, 21:39:48 Aha. Sincere apologies TJ. Must remember not to enter an arse kicking competition whilst wearing slippers. :P ;)
I did do 'quote' but was blinded by all the %20s. Used a browser based QR reader to decipher, but Phil beat me to the answer. Should've known that it would be a pedantic grammar correction. ::) And my maths failed as well. Added up the current poll results and got 16 for options two to five. :-[ bignosemac retires hurt. Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: Chris from Nailsea on January 30, 2012, 21:42:26 While I do occasionally fix 'broken' quote marks within another member's post in the interests of clarity, I would not presume to amend their text or correct their spelling.
Well, unless it's one of grahame's more blatant typos, obviously. ;D Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: Phil on January 31, 2012, 17:43:23 Well, unless it's one of grahame's more blatant typos, obviously. ;D That's Grahame's, right? ;D Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: Chris from Nailsea on January 31, 2012, 17:54:52 Graham's username is 'grahame'. ;)
Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: grahame on February 01, 2012, 09:00:11 Graham's username is 'grahame'. ;) Graham E - E as in first letter of surname. This is not the first forum I have been a member of, and on others the name "Graham" was sometimes taken before I joined - thus "grahame" to provide a consistency - mostly for me so that I don't forget what my name is somewhere. This poll was originally open ended. I have now set an end date at the weekend, at which point we can draw conclusions. Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: Phil on February 01, 2012, 18:57:42 Thanks for correcting me, chris.
Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: Surrey 455 on February 01, 2012, 21:30:28 "Do you use QR codes?"
Well I have done (FGW timetable poster) but I'm not a frequent user of them. Sorry I didn't place a vote because to say yes might imply I use them regularly. Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: standardsingle on February 02, 2012, 11:28:13 Please help me gauge how useful this is by completing the poll at the top of this page. Thanks! I find it useful, and it is appropriate since on a mobile device it takes you to a mobile version of this site that is readily usable. Saves typing in a url on a tiny keyboard, then I can save site to favourites and never type it again. You can also photograph the QR and save it or email it. These codes can effectively be virtual business cards, containing map links, telephone numbers and so on. So someone seeing a website or poster can just add it all to their contacts, no more losing slips of paper. So it reaches more people, faster, with almost no expense. Title: Re: QR Codes Post by: grahame on February 05, 2012, 17:25:42 As a significant proportion of people use QR codes, I'm going to place a QR code on each page. The current demonstration simply links to the top of the Coffee Shop. But I'm going to modify that so that the QR code use provides a link to the current board or topic. That way, if anyone prints out a page / hands it around others can get back to it.
