Dyfed-Powys Police say a 28-year-old man was severely beaten and thrown on to a railway line in Pembrokeshire.

The attack happened in the Ryelands Lane area near Kilgetty train station on Sunday 23 January, between 02:00-07:00 GMT.

Before the assault, the attacker was seen sitting on a bench by the town's chip shop. He spoke to the victim.

Police described the incident as "vicious". They are appealing for witnesses.

The attacker is described as white, 5ft 8in tall (1.72m), aged in his early 20s, slim build, and dark gelled flat hair. He was wearing a white top with blue jeans.

Det Chf Insp Shane Williams said: "This was a particularly vicious assault and the victim is recovering with support from police and other agencies.

"I'm also urging anyone who may have seen this person walking in the area, sat on a bench or who witnessed the assault, or heard about the incident from family or friends to contact Dyfed Powys Police."

Police say following the assault the attacker walked off in the direction of Stepaside School.

An incident room has been set up at Haverfordwest Police Station.

Dyfed-Powys Police has asked anyone with information to call 101 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

The 28-year-old male victim, who was severely beaten, was attacked in the Ryelands Lane area of Kilgetty, and in the vicinity of Kilgetty Railway Station, between 2am and 7am. During the assault the victim was also thrown onto to a railway line.

Following the arrest police have said that it is vitally important that they hear from witnesses who may have significant information.

Detective Chief Inspector Shane Williams said: ^This was a particularly vicious assault and the victim is recovering with support from police and other agencies.

^I am appealing for anyone who was in Kilgetty, specifically in the vicinity of the chip shop and Ryelands Lane at the time, to contact police.

^m also urging anyone who may have witnessed the assault, or heard about the incident from family or friends to contact Dyfed-Powys Police immediately on 101.^ He went on to say that incidents of this nature are rare in Pembrokeshire.
