British Transport Police appeal for information after alleged assault on train ^ Newton Abbot/Plymouth

British Transport Police (BTP) officers investigating an alleged assault on board a train travelling between Newton Abbot and Plymouth railway stations on Wednesday 18 January 2012 are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The incident is alleged to have taken place on board the 1704hrs London Paddington to Penzance service as it travelled between Newton Abbot and Plymouth between around 7.45pm and 8.25pm on Wednesday 18 January.

PC Steve Kelley, one of the investigating officers, said: ^BTP received a report that, following an argument, a female passenger in her late 20s was assaulted by a male in his thirties whom she was travelling with on board the First Great Western service between Newton Abbot and Plymouth.

^The train would have been busy at the time and I am, therefore, certain that any incident would have been witnessed by other passengers travelling on this service, which left London Paddington at 5.04pm and would have travelled through Newton Abbot and Plymouth between 7.45pm and 8.25pm.

^I would urge anyone who witnessed anything untoward on board this service to contact BTP straight away as you may have information which can assist the investigation.^
