DfT launches races for Great Western, Essex Thameside and Thameslink franchises. ITTs expected May, June and October 2012 respectively.

So what exactly is the news?  The difference between what he's saying and the OJEU PIN back in August is trivial...

GW ITT - May 2012
Essex Thameside - May 2012
Thaneslink ITT - Oct 2012

Maybe the DfT has put something out advising the month's delay to the C2C franchise?

They have issued the three OJEU notices today.

But that was planned to be this month anyway, as per the link...

On the face of it his 'tweet' is pretty much unnecessary - but I suppose it makes him feel important...

Shooting the starting gun on 3 franchises on one day- Essex, Thameslink and G Western - suggests the DfT is biting off more than it can chew

Roger Ford has an interesting piece on the new GW Franchise in December's Modern Railways.

He reckons it's going to be a bit of nightmare for the DaFT.

Who else is eyeing up the keys?

Branson? I assume NX won't bother!

Don't be so sure. Now that Elaine Holt is shortly to join National Express to head up their bid team as Bid Director, I think NatEx will be eyeing up one or more of the InterCity franchises.

I reakon First will probably win again, even though they mentioned they may give up the franchise.  I can see First Great Western going on for years and years....

IF another operator wins, will it make much difference anyway?  Would we see major timetable changes, and new and extended routes/services introduced?

Depends what they bid!
