I renewed my annual season ticket last night.
I was surprised to learn that even though there is a 5% discount on LTV (London [and] Thames Valley) renewals this is not applicable on a season ticket from a LTV station to Paddington even though this journey is a superset of a route via Reading on which the discount would apply.

My own naive thinking is that the HST (High Speed Train) service can go swimmingly but the journey as a whole can be (and is often) ruined by poor local service.
Clearly FGW (First Great Western) do not share my naive thinking - so is anyone a party to the rationale for this ?

Can you advise from where you are travelling - which station?

As I understand it, Reading is an HST (High Speed Train)-group station, and wouldn't attract the LTV (London [and] Thames Valley) discount.

Mortimer to Reading will attract the discount. A sign in the Reading ticket office window last night spelled out which LTV (London [and] Thames Valley) stations would or would be given the discount.
Mortimer to Paddington (via Reading) will not.

Majority of the trip made on HSTs (High Speed Train) by changing at Reading, which are not subject to the discount.

This may change when & if Crossrail launch their own fares/seasons from Reading & surrounds.

It might make sense in theory but if I'm unable to enjoy the smooth HST (High Speed Train) service because I cannot get to Reading in a timely fashion then it leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

An inconsistency that should be removed when GWR (Great Western Railway) introduce the Delay Repay scheme by the end of the year.
