I'm copying this (from Journey check) "Across the West" as what I felt was a good example of customer information for a short-notice change. All too often we criticise!
Customer Advice
Due to a tree near to railway land that needs to be felled during daylight hours in the Digby & Sowton area, the line between St James Park and Exmouth will be closed. The planned time of the closure is 09.15-15.45. During this time trains from Paignton and Barnstaple will terminate at Exeter St Davids/Exeter Central/St James Park. The location of where the services will terminate will vary train by train so please check individual updates.
There will be 3 rail replacement bus routes in operation between 09.25 and when the work on the tree is completed, the routes are as follows:
Route 1 - Exeter St Davids to Exmouth calling at Exeter Central and Topsham half hourly service.
Route 2 - Exeter St Davids to Exmouth calling at Polsloe Bridge, Digby & Sowton, Topsham, Lympstone Commando (on main road) half hourly service.
Minibus Route 3 - Topsham - Newcourt - Topsham - Exton - Lympstone Village - Exmouth. 16 seater mini bus which then will feed into / out of the main bus services at Topsham.
Please can customers note that if travelling from Paignton/Barnstaple going beyond St James Park, you are advised to change at Exeter St Davids and not at Exeter Central for the replacement bus routes.
Please check back for updates as the time of the line reopening may become amended.
Replacement road transport services are conveying passengers between Exeter St Davids and Exmouth in both directions until further notice.
