IIRC^▸ (if I recall/remember/read correctly) that building looks like the one at Goodrington Sands in Paignton. But I can't imagine how that wooden shed on the right would fit given that it's on a bridge.

The garden shed appeared to be employed as a ticket booth.




One of the highlights of the day trip to Dartmouth and Torbay was a most unusual bit of mainline running between Dawlish and Teignmouth:

Some excellent train regulation from the signallers to allow us to pass a local stopping service with the minimum of delay to that service, and not further delaying our service. The stars aligned perfectly to put us on the wrong road, slotting in between up services. It also meant we were able to connect with that stopper at Newton Abbot for Paignton.

Wow - that is unusual! I'm assuming then that the stopper either didn't stop at Dawlish Warren, or that 'wrong' line running was an easier and less problematic option than holding the stopper in the loop for 5 minutes.

It does look strange, and well done whoever organised it. I went to ExCrosscountry down, FGW^▸ (First Great Western) back, and we were slowed by a badly-delayed stopper being let out in front of us at Uphill junction. The TM^‡(resolve) was clearly unimpressed by this, and referred to it many times on the way. All told, it cost us 15 minutes.

I'm banned from the quiz, having met BNM at Temple Meads on the way home. We decided there was too much beer in the world, and went to do something about it. Fat lot of difference it would have made - I don't recognise the pictures.

I got home to I had lost my keys somewhere on the way. Blast! I have spares of all but one, making tomorrow "Take your crowbar to work day".

Myself and my travelling companions (well... one of them - the girlfriends were unimpressed by my enthusiasm for the 'bang road' run  ) had been discussing where, when and whether we would pass the Cardiff-Paignton service.

In normal running the 0730 Paddington-Penzance is due to pass the 0800 Cardiff-Paignton while it is on the Weston loop.

The PAD^» (Paddington (London) - next trains)-PNZ was delayed by signalling problems at Yatton, and the CDF^» (Cardiff - next trains)-PGN was off the loop and about 10 minutes ahead of the PAD-PNZ by Taunton. I speculated that we'd either pass it at Exeter St Davids or Dawlish Warren, but it appears that the signallers realised that putting us 'bang road' was possible due to a gap in up traffic. That meant there was no delay to stopper, or further to delay to the PAD-PNZ, which would have been the case if the CDF-PGN was held.

Whilst my girlfriend and I were waiting at Taunton we were sat next to a lady who boarded the CDF-PGN service. She was quite surprised to see us board the Paignton train at Newton Abbot, asking us how we'd got to Newton Abbot ahead of her! Although our destination was also Torbay we had waited for the delayed PAD-PNZ service at Taunton as a friend was already aboard that train.
