Pleased to see Dover on this list - because it should be. And, yes, I have lived there.

More surprised that Bracknell isn't! And, yes, I've lived there aswell!
2  Journey by Journey / London to Kennet Valley / Re: No trains between Theale and Westbury from Sat 18 Feb to Thu 2 Mar on: February 21, 2023, 15:11:04
Track replacement work (mainly on the up line) in progress today at Newbury Racecourse and Newbury.
3  Journey by Journey / Transport for London / Re: Crossrail/Elizabeth Line. From construction to operation - ongoing discussion on: June 03, 2022, 10:45:21
Took my first ride yesterday evening, Canary Wharf to Paddington, which took about 18 mins.

Quiet, smooth, fast, a bit of a non-event really - but I guess that's how it should be.

What came across also was the size of the stations, they are like enormous underground caverns.
4  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Platform extensions at Stations on the St Ives Line on: March 03, 2022, 16:00:44
Presumably Lelant Saltings won't need doing, or St Ives itself. That only lives Lelant and Carbis Bay (which are both shorter IIRC (if I recall/remember/read correctly))?

I remember that at some point in the 1990's, Carterton was voted (by Daily Mail readers) as "possibly the ugliest town in England". Other military towns I can think of would probably also be high up on the list.

(for those that don't know it, Carterton neighbours RAF (Royal Air Force) Brize Norton)

Is 12 on the Kennet & Avon, west of Bedwyn and Crofton, on the climb up to Savernake?

The loco sounded to be working very hard

....but presumbly not as hard as it would be on the run up to Savernake/Bruce Tunnel!

I would not ban cruises in general

Well, I'm sure the industry heaves a huge sigh of relief at that news  Wink

Grahame, will be interested to hear your impressions on Iona  Smiley

Secondly, poor standards of food hygiene with many catering staff from countries with flexible standards. Lack of refrigerated displays for help yourself buffets and the like.

I've been on 5 cruises with P&O (the last 2 years ago) and long before Covid was even a thought, hand-sanitising was strictly enforced on entering the dining rooms and widely used when entering the food servery areas in the buffets.

Cleanliness on board always seemed pretty good to me and I never experienced any onboard food-poisoning outbreaks or anything else.

As usual, it seems to me that you look for the negative in order to support your belligerent views, rather than the reality, which is that the issues you describe (including a cruise ship encountering a storm) are fairly rare.

My experience of the latter is that it's sometimes a lot rougher outside than the ship will make you feel it is.

I assume the above is from Skyscanner which does come up with some fairly wacky routings....who would really fly from Stansted to Glasgow via Alicante!?

117 miles in the first hour is not bad going!

and also see the Red Arrows by any chance?

Saw them from Porthminster Beach in St Ives - fab  Smiley

St Ives itself was fairly quiet (although not dead by any stretch) during the G7. Saw the rail replacement buses on their route a number of times and they seemed fairly quiet also.

Came home yesterday, but on Tuesday St Ives was heaving, especially for a mid-week, term-time day.

Wonder what is going for the 'drop' IET (Intercity Express Train)▸ ..

I can think of at least one member of this forum who might be hoping so!
14  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Exeter Airport - Sat 04/07 Resumption Of Commercial Flights (COVID-19) on: April 12, 2021, 09:08:40
The Passenger Terminal at Newquay is currently closed and there are no scheduled passenger flights scheduled until the end of the month. Apparently Boris was there last week to survey G7 preparations, however, and was flown in and out by the RAF (Royal Air Force).

Their website says that Skybus will resume to the IoS on 17th May.
15  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: Around the world in HOW MANY days? on: March 28, 2021, 10:22:48
Our honeymoon in 1995 was around the world in 3 weeks, via Bali, Queensland, New Zealand, Fiji and California. Longest stop anywhere was 6 days (Fiji).

Sounds a bit crazy thinking back to it now, but we were young and it was a great adventure.

About 48hrs (give or take) in the air - all in economy - and I remember the novelty that the last flight (LAX-LHR) was on a then brand-new Virgin 747-400 that had (very basic) seatback TV's!
