1  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Train departed 3 minutes earlier than scheduled on: Yesterday at 20:49:35
Someone on Twitter complained to GWR (Great Western Railway) that this morning's 0815 departure from Pewsey departed at 0812 which meant that some passengers missed it through no fault of their own and had to wait over an hour for the next train at 0927
https://x.com/thompson_r86939/status/1879082643758940168

I checked the train in question - 1J72 - on RTT» (Real Time Trains - website) and it shows that it indeed departed Pewsey 3 minutes earlier than scheduled:
https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:Y22156/2025-01-14/detailed#allox_id=0

I don't think this sort of thing happens very often, does it?
2  Journey by Journey / London to Kennet Valley / Re: Line between Bedwyn & Pewsey blocked due to several fires next to the railway on: July 03, 2024, 09:29:33
It is now in Hungerford loop awaiting inspection.

Overnight, it looks like 7A40 remained in Hungerford loop and 6A50 remained in Woodborough Up loop.

According to RTT» (Real Time Trains - website) both these stone trains are scheduled to depart from their respective loops this morning.
3  Journey by Journey / London to Kennet Valley / Re: Line between Bedwyn & Pewsey blocked due to several fires next to the railway on: July 02, 2024, 15:15:33
One incident near Pewsey and the other at Crofton.
I just heard from another source that there were at least four separate fires!
4  Journey by Journey / London to Kennet Valley / Re: Line between Bedwyn & Pewsey blocked due to several fires next to the railway on: July 02, 2024, 14:06:41
Steamer gone through ahead of it?

No steamers showing on Realtimetrains from this morning.

However, I just noticed that the 7A40 stone train from Merehead to Hanwell Bridge Loop went from 36mins late at Lavington to 87mins late at Bedwyn before coming to a stand between Bedwyn and Hungerford.
5  Journey by Journey / London to Kennet Valley / Line between Bedwyn & Pewsey blocked due to several fires next to the railway on: July 02, 2024, 13:35:35
GWR (Great Western Railway) Journeycheck is reporting: "Due to a fire next to the track between Pewsey and Bedwyn all lines are blocked. Disruption is expected until 15:00 02/07. Several fires next to the railway in the area between Bedwyn and Pewsey means that both lines on that route are currently blocked. The Fire Service is attending the fire locations."

It seems rather odd for there to be fires at multiple locations?

Also, if the line is blocked between Bedwyn and Pewsey, why has 1C77 (1035 PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains)-EXD» (Exeter St Davids - next trains)) been at the platform at Pewsey since 11:52 this morning? Did this train cause the fires?
6  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2024 - Service update and amendment log, Swindon <-> Westbury on: March 08, 2024, 13:28:54
6A16 a failure?

Someone on the WNXX (Stored Unserviceable, Mainline Locos HQ All Classes) forum has said that dragging brakes caused wheelflats on one or more wagons.

It now appears to have moved off as 6Z16 back to Westbury.
7  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2023 - Train update and amendment log - Swindon <-> Westbury on: July 12, 2023, 08:15:14
Spare a thought for the driver who saw it fall in front of the train!

Did they manage to stop in time?

Whereabouts did it happen?
8  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Problems with the Night Riviera sleeper - December 2014 onwards on: March 08, 2023, 13:22:35
Perfect time for a good nights sleep!)

I very much doubt it - At some point in the proceedings this morning, the usual sleeper set was swapped out for an IET (Intercity Express Train)Cheesy
9  Journey by Journey / London to Kennet Valley / No trains between Theale and Westbury from Sat 18 Feb to Thu 2 Mar on: February 14, 2023, 14:01:57
The line between Westbury and Theale will be completely closed between Sat 18 Feb - Thu 2 Mar which means no trains will be calling at intermediate stations: Pewsey, Bedwyn, Hungerford, Kintbury, Newbury, Newbury Racecourse, Thatcham, Midgham and Aldermaston. A rail replacement bus service will be in operation.

More details on the GWR (Great Western Railway) website:
https://www.gwr.com/travel-information/travel-updates/planned-engineering/newbury

Apparently, this work is essential to protect the ongoing safety of the route and involves relaying life-expired track, replacing lineside equipment and renewing structures. I do realise this sort of work is essential, but I think it is rather excessive to close such a long section of line for such a long time.  Angry
10  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Problems with IET trains from April 2021 on: September 28, 2022, 22:21:03
Yesterday, several members attended GWR (Great Western Railway)'s central area timetable briefing and it was confirmed that IETs (Intercity Express Train) will take over 4 or 5 diagrams for Cardiff to Penzance services from December, retiring Castles.

What is the rationale behind this decision? Seems bonkers to me.

In June I went for a trip on one of the Castle sets and thought it was brilliant. They have been refurbished really well and it will be a retrograde step to retire (and presumably scrap) them.
11  All across the Great Western territory / Introductions and chat / Re: Our (members) train use is down - poll as to why on: August 15, 2022, 20:27:27
You need to add an option to this poll: Train Strikes

Train Strikes are massively suppressing my train use. ...

That's a vote for "unreliable train services" please  Grin

I still think you need to add a separate option for train strikes.

Cracked brackets, lack of crew, floods, leaves on the line, disruptive passengers, scheduling errors, axle counter failure or a cow moo-ving around on the track are all unplanned one-off events which cause disruption that results in an unreliable train service.

That is rather different to having NO TRAINS ALL DAY on strike days because of train strikes which are deliberately planned to cause disruption.
12  All across the Great Western territory / Introductions and chat / Re: Our (members) train use is down - poll as to why on: August 15, 2022, 19:23:17
You need to add an option to this poll: Train Strikes

Train Strikes are massively suppressing my train use. My local station (Pewsey) has no trains on strike days and the day after a strike there are hardly any services calling at Pewsey.

I am fed up with these selfish rail unions holding the travelling public to ransom.
13  Journey by Journey / London to Swindon and Bristol / Train from Padd to Bristol TM cancelled due to overcrowding on: August 14, 2022, 13:05:41
It seems the 11:30 London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads today (Sun 14/8/2022) was cancelled "due to overcrowding"

1) Surely this would mean subsequent services would be even more crowded?
2) I wonder whether it was a 5-carriage, 9-carriage or 10-carriage train?
14  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Railway union workers industrial and strike action - 2022 on: June 17, 2022, 13:09:19
GWR (Great Western Railway) Revised strike day timetables for the 21st and 23rd are now available to view in the Journey planner/train timetable viewer of your choice.

Does anyone know where I can find PDFs of the strike day timetables?
15  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Two trains collide near Salisbury - 31 Oct 21 on: November 02, 2021, 17:29:12
Leaves on the line then?

Or perhaps an insufficient number of RHTT (Rail Head Treatment Train) workings over that stretch of line in the days leading up to the collision?
