1  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Re: Closure of Bridport branch on: May 05, 2025, 17:02:32
The Dorset Echo also has a piece about the closure today

Quote
IT has been 50 years since the railway branch between Maiden Newton and Bridport closed.

This railway closed on May 5, 1975, the goods service having been withdrawn on April 5, 1975.

The line first opened on November 12, 1857.

It was extended to West Bay in 1884, but the extension was not well used and it closed to passengers in 1930, however the extension remained open for goods until December 3, 1962.

Although it was a little used service, on the last day 50 years ago extra carriages had to be laid on for the huge interest with local people wanting to ride the last train.

2  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: WW2 Spitfire emergency landing after losing power - May 2025 on: May 05, 2025, 16:48:42
Thank you Clan Line. That is quite probably what I saw. I can't remember the time of day but the two planes seemed to be flying in formation with the larger plane just behind the Spitfire and slightly to its right. I didn't know that FlightRadar24 offered a playback facility.

I wonder if that's the same plane I saw flying over Eastney beach yesterday along with what looked like an old bomber. That had similar white stripes on the wings.

* When a train is cancelled, the App should offer alternative which are still running and fits within the normal interchange criteria

Have you tried the National Rail App? When a journey is known to be disrupted on one or more legs, the NR» (Network Rail - home page) app has offered alternatives routes / times to me.

Special test event provides valuable insight for Great Western Railway’s fast-charge battery trial

A special test event saw 250 volunteers board Great Western Railway’s battery train to help provide valuable insight for its industry-leading trial.

The ‘High Passenger Load’ operation tested energy consumption and will form part of findings to be fed back to the Department for Transport (DfT» (Department for Transport - about)).

Part of the "Project Churchill" campaign perhaps?

[cough] ChurchwardWink

Perhaps. Surrey County Council and Gatwick Airport executives have been pictured with Mark Hopwood next to a 230.

6  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: WH Smith name to disappear from high street but retained at stations on: March 28, 2025, 22:10:28
In my youth, WHSmith was where I used to go to buy books, records, cassette tapes, school stationery and just standing around reading their magazines. I have no need for any of that now. As MarkA mentioned they are so expensive now. To me, they have lost their relevance being undercut by other retailers. I will not mourn their demise like I did with Woolworths & Wilko.

Except they're not actually going anywhere. Just being bought out and renamed. I'm not sure what the new buyer sees in the stores. Maybe we'll find them all converted to something else in a year or two.

Some trains were re-routed to London Waterloo.

Did that really happen?

12 countries for me and of those I have used the train in at least 4 of them.

Sunday train services will be as reliable as those on weekdays under plans to renationalise the railways, the new transport secretary will claim in a keynote speech on Monday.

So no engineering works on future Sundays then?  Grin

I think Payton was the actor who played "Gloria" in "It Ain't Half Hot Mum", now banished form our screens for making fun of peoples' differences.

Not banned. It's on tonight and most nights on That's TV (Thames Valley, or TeleVision, depending on context) 2 on Freeview.

13  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Shortage of train crews on Great Western Railway - ongoing discussion on: December 13, 2024, 22:41:09
Well - I know that wasn't addressed to me, but I think I would start off by working out where we want to be in 20 years, and would then look to motivate all sectors involved - at all levels to get us there with their ownership of the project from grass roots level up.  The problem is getting the right people with the right authority in the room ... there are some ideas which should form part of a solution which results in shocked responses when you suggest them.

I would hope that in 20 years time many / most of the train crew for who Sunday is not part of the working week and choose not to work overtime on this day will have either been offered an incentive to change their contract or will have retired and been replaced with new drivers whose shifts include Sundays.

I would also hope that not being able to drive certain routes because you haven't signed that route will be a thing of the past thanks to a rail equivalent of GPS which would notify you in advance of where the signals are, when to start braking for the next station etc.
14  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: AQ11 - trivia questions in our region on: December 11, 2024, 20:18:16
**Three GWR (Great Western Railway) stations which - though not terminii - you can only leave in one direction on a passenger train:

Banbury, Basingstoke and Gatwick Airport. - Although I guess technically they are not GWR stations but stations GWR use and you can leave them in other directions with other TOC (Train Operating Company)'s. Maybe need to think again Wink

Ah, I was going to say Redhill but that's a Southern station.

Completion is expected in H1 2025 following approval from current ultimate owner the French government. The deal will bring around 12% of the TfL red bus market along with 10 depots in central and west London, 982 buses – of which a third are battery-electric – and in the region of 3,700 staff.
