I think Payton was the actor who played "Gloria" in "It Ain't Half Hot Mum", now banished form our screens for making fun of peoples' differences.

Not banned. It's on tonight and most nights on That's TV 2 on Freeview.

1. Looks like braille instructions for blind train drivers
4  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Shortage of train crews on Great Western Railway - ongoing discussion on: December 13, 2024, 22:41:09
Well - I know that wasn't addressed to me, but I think I would start off by working out where we want to be in 20 years, and would then look to motivate all sectors involved - at all levels to get us there with their ownership of the project from grass roots level up.  The problem is getting the right people with the right authority in the room ... there are some ideas which should form part of a solution which results in shocked responses when you suggest them.

I would hope that in 20 years time many / most of the train crew for who Sunday is not part of the working week and choose not to work overtime on this day will have either been offered an incentive to change their contract or will have retired and been replaced with new drivers whose shifts include Sundays.

I would also hope that not being able to drive certain routes because you haven't signed that route will be a thing of the past thanks to a rail equivalent of GPS which would notify you in advance of where the signals are, when to start braking for the next station etc.
5  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: AQ11 - trivia questions in our region on: December 11, 2024, 20:18:16
**Three GWR (Great Western Railway) stations which - though not terminii - you can only leave in one direction on a passenger train:

Banbury, Basingstoke and Gatwick Airport. - Although I guess technically they are not GWR stations but stations GWR use and you can leave them in other directions with other TOC (Train Operating Company)'s. Maybe need to think again Wink

Ah, I was going to say Redhill but that's a Southern station.
6  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / First re-enter the London bus market on: December 10, 2024, 22:54:50
First are returning to London after 10 years away.

FirstGroup is set to return to the Transport for London (TfL» (Transport for London - about)) contracted bus market after reaching a binding agreement to purchase of RATP Dev Transit London and its subsidiaries London United Busways, London Sovereign and London Transit for £90 million.

Completion is expected in H1 2025 following approval from current ultimate owner the French government. The deal will bring around 12% of the TfL red bus market along with 10 depots in central and west London, 982 buses – of which a third are battery-electric – and in the region of 3,700 staff.
7  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: AQ09 - 52 places you may have visited - how many? on: December 09, 2024, 19:09:01

I'll claim the lowest score of anyone.  I've visited only three places: Bucharest (airport), Lecce (outstanding architecture and so few tourists), and Wick (along with Thurso, on a damp day trip by train from Inverness).

Err, not quite. I score a lowly one (Madrid by plane) though I may have been to Minehead as a child.
8  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Taking Train Operation into public ownership - Govt planning from 4.12.2024 on: December 04, 2024, 19:38:12
I'm ... looking to get a list of where we stand on all the TOCs (Train Operating Company) and reverts to nationalisation:

2025 Abellio East Anglia Limited 2021 rail contract
tba  Abellio East Midlands Limited 2022 rail contract

Not called Abellio anymore. I believe a management buy out earlier this year created Transport UK (United Kingdom). However this page at https://www.greateranglia.co.uk/about-us/company-information refers to both Abellio East Anglia Limited and Transport UK East Anglia Limited
9  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Bridge bash statistics, from Network Rail - November 2024 on: November 22, 2024, 19:56:53
I don't understand why there isn't a gantry before these bridges with something dangling on a rope that would hit the top of the vehicle alerting the driver before they hit the bridge.
10  Journey by Journey / Transport for London / Re: More toilets for London on: November 07, 2024, 20:23:37
A bit late now, but during the rail strikes I used to have to take two buses to get to Morden for the tube. No public toilets anywhere (I remember there used to be at the Civic Centre) and it's not fun having to hold it in until you get to Central London. On those days Costa Coffee in Morden had longer queues for their toilets than their coffees.

I've since found this website but I can't vouch for the accuracy.

11  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Bus firm defends officers after woman 'humiliated' on: November 07, 2024, 20:17:07
There's a lot of variation in the circumstances in which a ticket will be issued though - between bus companies and even on the same bus.

*Diamondcard passes, nope.
*Touchcard, nope.
*Ticket on phone, nope.
*Cash, yup.
*Payment via a rfid transaction and a phone, perhaps.
*Payment using a debit card, can't recall.

This doesn't sound to be as wild as... certain car park arrangements (and we don't know if this story had two sides) but this is sounding like a customer service fail - the passenge had paid and could produce evidence that she had paid - also, possibly, a problematic relationship between them and the member of staff driving the bus and taking the fares (which is one of the more underrated jobs and if both are experienced they'll know where the actual fare dodging is happening. On London's buses it's often very visible even to other passengers and is really annoying)

TfL» (Transport for London - about), More bus, Brighton & Hove - NO
Falcon Bus (Surrey) - YES

From memory in recent months, First bus in Bristol I think was also a no. Stagecoach in Hastings I can't remember.
Perhaps if you have to tell the driver where you are getting off, you get a ticket?
12  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Bus firm defends officers after woman 'humiliated' on: November 07, 2024, 20:08:12
For all we know, the driver asked the passenger to take her  ticket, and she chose not to. Maybe her hands were full. Nut the T&Cs (which she accepted by paying for travel) require her to be in possession of a ticket while travelling. Not the companys fault if the passenger refuses to read the T&cs. she chose to get on the bus.

Boarding would be very slow if you had to read and agree T&Cs when buying on the bus. Were they on display?
13  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Shortage of train crews on Great Western Railway - ongoing discussion on: November 01, 2024, 20:36:15
Reading predictions on other forums that this coming Sunday is expected to be the worst yet for crew shortage cancellations/general chaos.

From https://www.gwr.com/disruption-3-nov
Quote
Essential short-notice track repairs will block access to the Stoke Gifford Train Depot in the Bristol area on Sunday 3 November.

Although we will be able to move some trains to alternative locations in advance, fewer trains will be available for passenger service throughout the day. Services will also not be able to stop at Bristol Parkway.

This is in addition to pre-planned engineering work between Reading and Didcot which will already significantly limit our ability to run services between London Paddington, Bristol Temple Meads and South Wales.

Services that do run are expected to be extremely busy. Customers are advised to only travel if absolutely necessary on these routes.

Because of the late notice of some of these works, and the complexity of updating timetable systems, journey planners will not show every change correctly before Sunday morning.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused by this disruption. Customers with tickets for Sunday 3 November on the affected routes will be able to use them to travel on Saturday 2 or Monday 4 November. If you prefer, you can claim a full refund.

Services between Devon/Cornwall and London Paddington are expected to operate as normal.

For the latest information and to check your journey visit GWR (Great Western Railway).com/check.

Here's Network Rail's take on today's events, together with a cab's eye view of some of the route.

https://www.networkrailmediacentre.co.uk/news/first-train-completes-test-run-between-oxford-and-milton-keynes-for-east-west-rail

I wonder how the drivers & trainers are trained on anew route that no one's worked?

The destination of that Chiltern train is "Merry Christmas"  Grin

Looks like the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) weather app and website have returned to normal. A glitch in their data feed meant they were forecasting temperatures of over 400C and wind speeds of 13000mph for parts of the UK (United Kingdom)
