Once again thank you for the update to your always useful map.

A possible amendment. I believe the branch from Hamble station to Hamble-le-Rice oil terminal is no longer extant. There are remanent tracks going south from Hamble Lane towards the terminal, northwards Bing Maps show the Hamble Rail Trail cycle way along the line of the branch.

Have not cycled the Hamble Rail Trail, normally just cross it going down Hamble Lane to the ferry.

Oops! 'Green' ferry emits more CO2 than old diesel ship

Hope this will not be the fate of the rumoured electric Isle of Wight ferry
https://onthewight.com/red-funnel-to-add-zero-emission-electric-ferry-for-eco-friendly-isle-of-wight-travel-by-2025/
In the light of the CalMac experience I wonder how far late 2025 will stretch.

I suppose you have to start the conversation somewhere
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/cross-pavement-solutions-for-charging-electric-vehicles/cross-pavement-solutions-for-charging-electric-vehicles Being released on Christmas Eve I do wonder if it was something they were trying to slip under the radar.

First thought; will this be more stuff the less able bump into, trip over or can't get the wheelchair round. Before we get to double buggies. Second thought; should it be mandatory to ban on pavement parking before any of this is implemented?

At least DfT» (Department for Transport - about) have noticed the one big problem The availability of parking adjacent to the applicant’s property. For example, my street only has parking one side. Can see

The installation of a cross-pavement solution does not give the resident ownership or priority to the parking space outside their home, and this should be made clear to the resident.
being the cause internecine strife.

Haven't read it all in detail. Not directly relevant to my geriatric-powered bike

£1 million upgrade touted for popular cycling path, including CCTV (Closed Circuit Tele Vision) cameras to tackle "wild west" bikejackings that saw cyclists ditch route and feel "safer between buses and cars"

All very well having CCTV, but who will be monitoring it? Bodies cost money or will they hope to do something with AI.
7  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: AQ17 - Correcting the subtitling, GWR on: December 18, 2024, 09:47:23
A common problem. Is it because we don't speak clearly and distinctly, or because the software expects American accents. It gets even more challenging with technical subjects, results more like pin the tail on the donkey.

Several drivers have told the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) that a recent pay deal means they do not need the extra money they earn by working on their rest days.

The deal included an element of backdated pay for the previous two years, which means drivers received a lump sum in their autumn payslips.

9  All across the Great Western territory / Who's who on Western railways / Re: Louise Haigh, Transport Secretary until 28 Nov 2024 on: December 03, 2024, 18:26:58
No, my advice to anyone sane is to forget about being a MP (Member of Parliament). Stick to something where you are universally adored, like presenting TV cookery competitions.

I seem to remember that didn't work out very well for MP and celebrity food writer Clement Freud...

And another gentleman (?) currently in the news.

The first of many?

From my lowly point of view SWR» (South Western Railway - about) ran a good service on Reading surburban and Wessex services. My beef tended to be with NR» (Network Rail - home page) forever digging it up and restricting my travel.

If you aren't aware the Westbury bound platform at Dilton Marsh is currently closed because the platform disintegrated when a guard was getting back on a train last night.

Was this a new platform? Any others built the same way?
12  All across the Great Western territory / Active travel: Cyclists and walkers, including how the railways deal with them / Re: Cyclists - death toll on our roads on: December 03, 2024, 12:02:29
SUVs are sometimes highlighted as a particular problem. The higher front end tends to more severe effects when in collision with walkers or cyclists.
13  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Cost of travel - how much is in the fare? on: December 03, 2024, 12:00:01
Definitely more than half, but in my case it is usually for a cycling trip with food and drink carried from home.
14  All across the Great Western territory / Who's who on Western railways / Re: Louise Haigh, Transport Secretary until 28 Nov 2024 on: December 03, 2024, 11:57:42
Another point of view; an ally of Liz Grey has been removed. If that is the case who is running the Cabinet/Government Keir Starmer or Morgan McSweeney? And who could be next?

I guess you mean Sue Gray?

Guilty as charged

I believe Hawaii passed an ordinance saying you would be fined USD50 if you stepped off the sidewalk looking at your mobile phone. Whether it was enforced or was enforcible I don't know. As another pedal-powered road user it would make life safer. And then noise-cancelling headphones, sometimes think we are getting into zombie territory.
