Bmblbzzz I'm rather surprised that you seem not to have encountered this (by which, to be clear, I mean you haven't heard someone setting the alarms off
I am offended by your comment,do you think I am thick or something?
Yes I have heard the alarm go off,but if you have ever been near the security guards "desk" when the alarm goes off.
Its generally a high value item that has been bought in another outlet, and in the shoppers personal bag.
I'm sorry you're offended, no offence was intended and there was certainly no suggestion you might be "thick". I'm not really sure what you found offensive about my comment; you might simply never have heard such an alarm, through chance, being hard of hearing, only shopping in small shops which tend not to have them, or whatever other reason. But you have heard it, we've both heard it, we know what sets it off... there doesn't really seem anything to get offended about???

Sideshoots - associated subjects / Heritage railway lines, Railtours, other rail based attractions / Re: Bristol Lodekka

We already have a "Buses and other ways to travel" board. Or if it's something more historical, we have both "Heritage railway lines, Railtours, other rail based attractions" and "Railway History and related topics" – and at least 40 other boards (I started counting them but lost track). Many of those boards overlap, eg "The Lighter Side", "The West - but NOT trains in the West", "Frequent Posters Club", "And Also", "Introductions and chat" and "Member Services" all overlap. The last hasn't been posted in for almost two years and "The Wider Picture - related rail and other transport issues" for almost one year. It's already hard enough to decide where to start a new topic or look for an already relevant one, so if we really have to have a new board, can we please get rid of one or more old ones?

could bar codes not be de-energised,like goal line technology in football?
So if you passed under a bar leaving the supermarket the item not de-energised would set off a bleep/buzz?
Thousands* of lines of items are fitted with near-field communication devices to set off alarms at supermarket doors. Not just supermarkets, all sorts of shops. I'm rather surprised that you seem not to have encountered this (by which, to be clear, I mean you haven't heard someone setting the alarms off – I'm not making allegations of shoplifting!). Mostly, it doesn't seem to result in any action unless there's a security guard standing right there. *Vague term, it's a guess. I suspect probably an underestimate by a factor of a hundred or so.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-66895425Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged the government against building a "mutilated" version of HS2▸ .
He said suggestions the high-speed rail link that began construction under his premiership could be scaled back were "Treasury-driven nonsense". ... The former prime ministersaid: "It makes no sense at all to deliver a mutilated HS2", adding there was a "need" for the rail link in the north of England.
The bosses of dozens of businesses and business groups - including Manchester Airports Group, British Land, Virgin Money, and the Northern Powerhouse - have all signed the letter to the government urging renewed commitment to HS2, saying that repeated mixed signals are damaging the UK▸ 's reputation and the wider supply chain.
"Two years ago, Yorkshire and the North-East lost the eastern Leg of HS2, with no settled alternative yet identified following protracted delays," they said.
"It is now reported that the entire line from Birmingham to Crewe - allowing access to Scotland - the new line to Manchester, and Euston station as the terminus may all be cancelled entirely in the upcoming Autumn Statement".
They added the "repeated mixed signals" on HS2 were damaging the country's wider supply chain as "spending commitments cannot be made with confidence". I don't think I've agreed with Boris Johnson before, apart from when he resigned, but I do here. Yes, Rishi Sunak is desperate for votes as we get closer to the election, but this isn't going to help as much as he hopes it will, if indeed he thought it would. I see a possible bit of political chicanery here, with this being the usual leak to test the water. This time, it will also be intended to goad Labour into saying what they will do, before deciding whether to confirm plans to chop most of the planned route off, or for Super Rishi come to the rescue. After all, he has recently stopped plans to force people to share cars and use seven separate bins for recycling, even if they didn't exist, and the supposed easing of the end date for ICE vehicles doesn't mean that any will be available to buy new after 2030. Shortening HS2 would be a high risk strategy. It might please some of the louder voices in the debate, but does nothing to improve the situation on the GWML▸ or for the mythical "North". It's a disturbing feeling, isn't it? But still, stopped clocks are right twice a day and so might slopped cocks be.

When I lived in Bristol my local station was Stapleton Road. A couple of years before I moved away, a community run garden centre was set up on what was then the space where the third and fourth tracks had been. With plans for the four-tracking along that section, permission was given on a temporary basis for it to operate until it was needed to restore the four tracks.
I thought that was quite far-sighted, making use of railway infrastructure where there were plans for future development. I'm not certain what happened to the garden centre when it was moved, though I think they may have operated temporarily on part of the 'car park' at the station, which isn't actually available for cars to use as the access road to it isn't suitable for traffic movements on the main road, and I think is used just by rail operators for access.
There's also a community garden in what looks like it probably used to be a station building on northbound platform of Ashchurch.

these user to be buffet CARs in the past, before their daft removal.
Yup. With the announcement: "You can find the buffer car in coach F." If the buffer car doesn't stop at the end of the line, it will hit the buffets. And that would give the diners (and their dinners) a buffeting.

Funnel colour change from the BBC» Isle of Wight ferry operator Red Funnel has taken over a passenger link across Southampton Water.
The operator of the Hythe Ferry, Blue Funnel, had suffered from rising costs and low passenger numbers since the Covid pandemic.
Red Funnel said it had bought the ferry to maintain the service of "historical significance".
Blue Funnel's Lee Rayment said it meant the ferry would "continue to serve Hythe and the Solent community". They could merge and become Purple Funnel.
